US Open Tennis 2012: Day 7 Scores, Results and Recap

Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer and Juan Martin Del Potro all progressed to the fourth round with their performance in the third round of the tournament. However, the biggest news are the upsets of Petra Kvitova and Maria Sharapova.

The final Grand Slam of the year finally enters into the quarterfinals for the women and the fourth round for the men on the eighth day of the competition.

Novak Djokovic Dominates Julien Benneteau

Djokovic was able to crush the U.S. Open dreams of the Frenchman in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Djokovic utilized his signature baseline play to take out the aggressive Benneteau and will be facing the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in the fourth round.

 

Maria Sharapova Defeats Nadia Petrova After a Rain Delay

Maria Sharapova was taken to the brink of defeat, but in the end, she was able to pull it out after a rain delay. The first two sets were split between Sharapova and Petrova. Sharapova took the first set 6-1, but Petrova won the second set 6-4.

The third set was won 6-4 by Sharapova after Petrova took a 2-0 lead into the rain delay. After the break, Sharapova was a woman possessed and seemed to be playing with added motivation. Sharapova will face Marion Bartoli in the quarterfinals.

 

Marion Bartoli Upsets Petra Kvitova

Bartoli took the Czech 22-year-old to three sets and forced her out of the tournament, winning 1-6, 6-2, 6-0. The Italian was ranked 11th before defeating the fifth-ranked Kvitova. Bartoli was able to win the quarterfinal spot and will play Sharapova.
