NHL Trade Rumors: Ales Hemsky and Top Upcoming FAs Who Will Be Dealt

Ryan RudnanskyJun 2, 2018

It's getting to that time of the NHL season, when teams frantically move to acquire those pieces who will push them over the top.

Yep, the Feb. 27 trade deadline is just around the corner.

As always, several contenders are looking for a player to help them during the stretch run, even if that player is an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Here are the top 2012 free agents who will find a new home before Feb. 27.

3. Johnny Oduya, D, Winnipeg Jets

With the Winnipeg Jets on the outside looking in on the Eastern Conference playoff picture, general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff made it known that he's looking to acquire some pieces for the future, and if it means trading away some veterans, then so be it.

In that regard, Johnny Oduya is one of the names being floated out there before the deadline.

Plenty of contenders this season, including the Chicago Blackhawks, are seeking experienced defensemen for the playoff push. Oduya isn't a game-changing player, but he would add depth to a roster and be headstrong come the postseason.

2. Shane O'Brien, D, Colorado Avalanche

Shane O'Brien has had a good season for the Avalanche, and there's still a chance the veteran stays with the team.

But the Avalanche also have some solid prospects in Tyson Barrie and Stefan Elliott who could conceivably step into O'Brien's skates if he's traded.

The Avalanche probably aren't searching to unload O'Brien, but given the number of contenders vying for a strong defenseman, I expect them to get an offer they can't refuse.

1. Ales Hemsky, RW, Edmonton Oilers

Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon reportedly wants to add some scoring up front.

In that regard, Ales Hemsky is being thrown around a lot as a possible fit, given the Oilers are in second-to-last place in the Western Conference and he's set to become a free agent after the season.

Hemsky has a couple 20-goal seasons under his belt, and he's played well at times this season. He's also an experienced player who could help a contender.
