LSU vs. Alabama Rematch Will Be Best BCS Championship Game Ever

Jake MartinDec 27, 2011

The first game was a defensive classic that would make your grandfather proud, and the next meeting between the LSU Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide will be the greatest BCS Championship game ever.

My frustration is at an all-time high because of the disrespect being shown to not only this championship game but the offenses in this championship game. You already know how great these defenses are, so allow me to educate the naysayers on how talented these offenses are.

For those who think these two offenses are stale, I have one question for you—is the LSU/Alabama regular season game the only game you watched from these two teams this year?

Both of the offenses possess a trampling rushing attack and a pass offense that can take advantage of defenses loading the box.

Excluding their game on Nov. 5, LSU averaged 37.4 points per game and Alabama averaged 38.7. In case you forgot, both played against a who’s who this season like the Oregon Ducks, West Virginia Mountaineers, Arkansas Razorbacks, Georgia Bulldogs and Penn State before the whole Jerry Sandusky debacle began.

While both defenses dominated throughout the season with the Tigers giving up 10.5 points per game and the Crimson Tide giving up 8.8, the offenses racked up some yards over the season.

If you’re one of those who aren’t sold on “eyeball tests” and can’t look at both of these rushing attacks and see dominance, let me throw some numbers your way.

Again, excluding their game against one another, LSU averaged 224.5 yards per game rushing and Alabama averaged 231 yards per game rushing. I’d say both teams are pretty good when it comes to pounding the rock.

So the game they played on Nov. 5 doesn’t take away anything away from either offense, it just shows how dominant and how athletically gifted both defenses are.

The interceptions that Mo Claiborne and Eric Reid made were the same type of plays you see on Sundays, and those bruising, hard hits that Dont’a Hightower delivered symbolizes the quality of play that makes the SEC the best in college football.

We’re talking about two of the most talented teams that college football has ever seen going against one another again, and what’s so exciting about this rematch is the adjustments both coaching staffs must make.

Nick Saban and his staff have to worry about Jordan Jefferson and LSU’s option attack. That was the clear difference-maker for LSU on offense in the first game. Alabama’s linebackers and defensive line are big and powerful but are vulnerable to an option attack. But then again, if you give Saban more than a month to prepare, I’m pretty sure he’s going to find a way to stop it.

As for offensive adjustments, they have to figure out how to finish drives against this athletic defense.

LSU’s defense is a bend-but-don’t-break defense. The offense might get a few big plays in here or there, but sooner or later, LSU will cause a fumble or interception and make you pay for it. LSU did that on Nov. 5 with Claiborne and Reid’s interceptions.

That’s what Alabama has to think about, but LSU has to think about trying to stop Trent Richardson and having more success in the red zone against Alabama’s defense.

There might not be one guy on LSU’s defense that can take Richardson head-to-head, so LSU is going to have to swarm. That’s something this defense is good at because of their speed off the edge and athleticism on the defensive line.

They have to cover Richardson coming out of the backfield, too, which is something they did a terrible job with in the first game.

The bottom line is that these are minor tweaks and adjustments and that’s what it’s going to take for one team to beat the other. These teams are that evenly matched, and it’s going to make for another hard-fought game.

I thought the first game was a classic between two brilliant defenses imposing their will, but just because their names weren’t the Pittsburgh Steelers or Baltimore Ravens, LSU and Alabama were scrutinized for a “boring” performance. Give me a break.

Both teams have had a dominant season, and if those numbers earlier didn’t impress, you probably shouldn’t call yourself a football fan.

LSU and Alabama are clearly the best teams in the nation. Neither of these teams lost to a 6-6 Iowa State Cyclones’ club or lost by 23 to the Oregon Ducks. No, these are the best of the best, and they’ve proven it every single week.

This season, teams played at a high level, then a higher level, and then it was LSU and Alabama.

In a season that was dominated by two football teams, it’s destiny for these two teams to have the best championship game of all time.
