Key Storyline

Both teams had relatively disappointing regular seasons and will be looking to end the year on a high note.

Toledo started 1-3 but ended up finishing 8-4, narrowly missing a berth in the MAC Championship game behind the Northern Illinois Huskies in the West.

Air Force ended up at 7-5 and had a losing 3-4 record in the Mountain West, due in large part to major injuries suffered to key players throughout the year.

What it Means for Toledo

The Rockets are looking to continue their high-powered offensive ways under 32-year-old head coach Matt Campbell.

Campbell assumed interim coaching duties after Tim Beckman abandoned the program to accept a job with the Illinois Fighting Illini earlier this month.

The former offensive coordinator, who has since had the interim tag dropped, created an offense that put up 42.3 points per game and combined to average nearly 500 yards.

We’ll see if the team can keep up that production now that Campbell is running the whole show.

What it Means for Air Force

The Falcons will try to match up with the Rockets offense and will be employing their triple-option attack to get it done.

They averaged over 320 yards per game on the ground and proved they can decimate teams with the rush.

While they averaged nearly eight fewer points per game than the Rockets, the Falcons have the ability to put up points in bunches and hang with anyone.

What They're Saying

Zach Silka of The Toledo Blade is reporting that senior defensive tackle Johnathan Lamb was surprised but happy to be named a captain for this upcoming bowl game.

"

"This was my first year seeing consistent action, and I couldn't wait to get out here and prove what I have to offer," Lamb said. "I had a real hunger built up from my freshman year. Ever since I've been here, I'm been waiting to get out there and show what I have."

"

Frank Schwab of The Gazette found that a number of Air Force seniors are graduating and moving on, leaving them a long shot to be back in a bowl game in 2012.

"

“[Air Force has] 17 starters departing, including many players who will live on in multiple top-10 lists inside the Air Force history books.”

"

Toledo Player to Watch: Terrance Owens

This young QB has only made two starts this season for the Rockets and will need to have a good game to lead his team past the Falcons.

Air Force Player to Watch: Tim Jefferson, Jr.

The senior QB has accounted for 22 touchdowns this season, with 12 coming via passes and 10 earned with his feet.

If he can continue to be a dual threat out of the triple option, Air Force can win this game.

Prediction

Air Force 35, Toledo 32

This is going to be a very evenly matched game between two teams with high-powered offenses.

Look for Air Force to win by controlling the ground and running the clock out when it matters.
