Georgia Football: Is Another 'Dream Team' Class in the Works?
There is one more game that the Bulldogs have to play before the 2011 season comes to a close.
But with 2012 right around the corner, it’s time for the Bulldogs to put the petal to the metal when it comes to the recruiting game.
Last year, the Bulldogs made a huge splash when they put together the “Dream Team,” which was a class that featured some of the best prospects in the state of Georgia, such as Ray Drew, Jay Rome, Malcolm Mitchell and Isaiah Crowell.
Due to the talent the Bulldogs brought in, a good number of the young players played a lot, and as a result the Bulldogs reached the SEC title game for the first time since 2005.
So, what does a team do to top the first Dream Team class?
They have to form another one, and that’s what the Bulldogs are trying to do for the 2012 class.
So far, the Bulldogs have 15 players that have committed to sign in February. Of those 15 players, nine are from Georgia. Of those nine, two have a chance to play right away in 2012.
Defensive tackle Jonathan Taylor went to high school at Jenkins County, which is located in Millen, Ga.
According to Rivals, Taylor is the third-best prospect in the state and the sixth-best defensive tackle in the country. At 6'4", 315 pounds, he has chance to make an impact at the nose-tackle position.
The other player from Georgia that could make some noise is Blake Tibbs, who played for M.L. King High School in Lithonia. Because Brandon Boykin will not be back next year, Tibbs has a very good chance to get some playing time as a return specialist.
Tibbs had over 1,000 receiving yards with 15 touchdowns last year, as well as two kickoff returns for touchdowns.
The Bulldogs should finish strong in the state, especially with their reaching the SEC title game with young talent. But they make their mark through the pipeline states.
The Bulldogs got great news recently, as top-rated running-back prospect Keith Marshall committed to the Dawgs.
Marshall is from Raleigh, N.C., and is considered the best all-purpose back in the country. Marshall rushed for 1,891 yards and 25 touchdowns this past season.
Another out-of-state prospect that is looking to make a huge impact is offensive lineman John Theus, who is from Jacksonville, Fla.
Theus is the top prospect in the state and the second-best offensive tackle in the country, according to Rivals.
This was huge for the Bulldogs because they are losing both tackles (Cordy Glenn and Justin Anderson) due to graduation.
If there is one player that the Bulldogs are targeting, it’s most likely linebacker Josh Harvey-Clemons from Valdosta, Ga. Harvey-Clemons is the state’s top prospect and also the top-rated athlete in the country.
The Bulldogs are near the top of Harvey-Clemons' list, so it should be interesting to see what decision he makes in the next few weeks.
The Bulldogs' 2012 class may not have the same star power as the class from last year, but they are players that are very talented and should contribute right away.
The “Dream Team” was a great move by Mark Richt last year, and by the way things are going for this recruiting class, it looks as though it will have a long-lasting effect.
