MMA 2009 through Granny's Eyes

Dorothy WillisJan 1, 2009

In reading the articles on Bleacher Report today I have noticed a preponderance of 2009 predictions for MMA.

As a young woman I had the audacity to believe that I truly could look into the future and predict events and certain outcomes in sports and other things once important to me.

Crystal balls were not my thing, however.

I used candles of red, black and white. At the moment, I can no longer remember why.

I did make predictions that came true.

I "saw" a president being shot before President Ford's unfortunate assassination attempt and it scared me too death.

Later when President Reagan was shot I was almost completely incapacitated when remembering the other prediction. I kept wondering why I would see one and not the other event.

Yeah, I know. Try to make sense of that!

For a while I actually believed I could cast spells after learning about how to perform Voodoo curses.

Unfortunately, when some very unfortunate events occurred after I had cast "spells," I quickly turned away from the practice.

Now days I don't believe that men are supposed to have the power to see into the future or try to manipulate it.

I do pray a lot, but only for good, never negative outcomes.

Regarding MMA I mostly pray for the fighters' safety and well being; although I will admit to having favorites who receive more prayer time than others.

While reading everyone elses' predictions for the New Year, I have discovered why I love MMA so very much.

The reason is because it defies predictions.

Yes, people bet on their predictions and there is a 50-50 chance that they will be right, but there is also a 50-50 chance that they will be wrong.

That is life for you and the nature of MMA as well.

Although I am in heaven when one of "my" fighters wins, I would not enjoy the events so much if I knew ahead of time that my fighter would win.

It is the uncertainty as I am riveted to my TV and literally on the edge of my seat cheering, that makes the sport so exciting—it is completely unpredictable in my opinion.

Such unexpected occurrences as Matt Serra's big fist stopping Georges St. Pierre when no one expected it to happen, or Patrick Cote's leg giving out during the third round with Anderson Silva are just two examples.

How many people predicted those events correctly?

Okay, so some few may have predicted the outcomes correctly, but I do not believe they foresaw the way the outcomes would occur.

Maybe old age and my life experiences have made me a cynic. Perhaps, though, those same things have made me more of a realist. Who's to say?

Now, for my sake and everyone else who reads my articles, "My MMA prediction for 2009 (did I just hear a drum roll?) is that it will be a fabulous, excitement filled year of unexpected and unpredictable outcomes."

And for my enduring love of the sport, I wouldn't want it any other way!

Grandma Dee loves surprises!
