20 New Year Resolutions for Premier League Teams
A New Year Resolution is a commitment by an individual or group to achieve their goals or drop bad habits. It is a promise to start doing something good and give up something bad.
The New Year is a vital period for all teams. After the Christmas mayhem, teams will be looking to pick up points they may have lost or consolidate, if they gained points.
Here are 20 New Year Resolutions for each Premier League Team.
Manchester City: Mancini to Keep Squad Happy
1 of 20Manchester City sit atop the Premier League at this moment in time. The situation looks pretty sound for City but with a squad full of big personalities, Mancini has a fight on his hands to keep his squad happy.
Players such as Nigel de Jong and Adam Johnson must be frustrated as bench warmers. While Kolo Toure has stated that he will be forced to leave if he does not get game time.
If City are going to win the league, Mancini must continue to keep some of the playing staff happy. If not, City's title challenge will derail drastically.
Manchester United: Get Tom Cleverley Fit
2 of 20It is no coincidence that Manchester United's poor run of performances between October and November has been a time when Tom Cleverley has been injured. The lad who grew up in Bradford, had a marvelous start to the season when he turned the Community Shield around with his introduction at half time.
Manchester United have lacked a certain flair in the centre of the park with his absence. If Tom Cleverley can get fit early into 2012, Fergie will not have to buy in January and Manchester United will have a better chance of winning the league.
Tottenham Hotspur: Keep Luka Modric and Buy Quality in Defence
3 of 20Andre Villas-Boas has recently denied that he would make a move for Luka Modric but there is no doubt there will be many suitors for the Croatian in January. It is of prime importance that Spurs keep the midfielder and that Modric then keeps in form.
Harry Redknapp also needs some quality in Defence. Ledley King is a ticking time bomb and William Gallas is always prone to a mistake. There is also little depth in that department with Bassong not a favorite of the manager while Younes Kaboul has performed and still has not cemented a place. Gary Cahill could be an option.
Chelsea: Purchase Two Defenders
4 of 20If he is found guilty, John Terry could easily be banned for more games than Luis Suarez. Similar to Tottenham, they are lacking in this area.
If Terry is suspended for a long period of time, a depleted centre defence could consist of Ivanovic and David Luiz. I'm sure Villas Boas would be worried if this situation was to happen. Two defenders would be needed. One to cover the hole that Terry's suspension would create and another for cover. Again Cahill would be an option, as would Neven Subotic or Mats Hummels.
Arsenal: Give Robin Van Persie Contract He Wants
5 of 20If Arsenal are to qualify for the Champions League next year, it will all be in vain if they do not resolve Robin Van Persie's contract before the summer.
Time and time again we see a player in the last year of his contract not performing. Arsenal do not want the same situation as seen with Cesc Fabregas.
Top money must be offered to the Dutchman and the promise of new, quality signings.
Liverpool: Fight for Champions League Despite Lucas Injury and Luis Suarez Ban
6 of 20Liverpool are only three points off a Champions League place. Some might say that it was the form of Lucas and Luis Suarez that has got them in this position.
Now with both out for different amounts of time, one might surmise that Liverpool will slowly drift away from the Champions League race.
It is vital that Liverpool keep progressing under Dalglish. A Champions League spot would be substantial progress for the Reds.
Newcastle United: Try Not to Drift Away
7 of 20It often happens that when a team starts well they slowly begin to stutter, and then stall completely. Newcastle are on the way to becoming one of these teams. The Geordies have now not won in six games.
Alan Pardew must make changes if he wants the team to have a significant season.
Stoke City: Improve Goalscoring Record
8 of 20Only two teams have scored less than Stoke and in only two games have they won by more than one goal. Scoring is clearly a problem for the Potters.
Only eight of their 18 goals have been scored by strikers. Whether Tony Pulis buys in the January transfer window or he brings in other options from the bench, Stoke must improve.
Norwich City: Consolidate Position
9 of 20If Norwich was to finish in ninth position, the season would have been an immense success. However, the fact that they are only six points from the relegation places shows the competitive nature of that half of the table.
Therefore, it is essential that the Canaries continue with some consistent form which will prevent them from free-falling down the table.
West Bromwich Albion: Compete Against Better Teams
10 of 20The fact that West Bromwich have gained points from only one team in the top half, Norwich, conveys a weak character and lack of a fighting spirit.
Hodgson is known for getting the best out of weaker sides and one must hope that West Bromwich keep getting points from teams below them. If they do not, they are in trouble.
Everton: Add Depth to Squad
11 of 20No signings Everton have made in the last two years have set the club alight. Very little money is made available to David Moyes. That is seen in the slow decline of the team in the last few seasons.
If Everton want to finish in the top half this season, they will need to buy at least three players in January although Loan transfers seem to be the best option.
Aston Villa: Get Rid of Manager
12 of 20The signing of Alex McLeish as manager was an immediately idiotic one. No manager in recent memory has achieved with a club after fans protest even before the first game in charge.
McLeish at Ashton Villa is a ticking time bomb. One heavy defeat will see pressure mount on the Scotsman and lead to bad results. Get rid of him now and the team (which has potential) will grow substantially.
Fulham: Try to Improve Relationship Between Manager and Players
13 of 20Dutchmen are naturally confrontational. Martin Jol always seemed to be the exception of that rule.
However at Fulham, Jol seems to be just as quarrelsome as his countrymen. He has apparently fallen out with Bobby Zamora among others. A settling of differences might be in order at the London club.
Swansea City: Start to Play Two Strikers
14 of 20Swansea have the joint worst goalscoring record in the Premier League. They have not bought quality in that area and as a result they only have Danny Graham with any sort of scoring record.
Looking at Swansea play, it is noticeable that Graham is often isolated. We know Brendan Rodgers comes from the Jose Mourinho school of management, so he likes a five in midfield but two up front may be a better option for the south Wales club.
Sunderland: Keep on Improving Mental Strength
15 of 20Under Steve Bruce, it was notable that they lost most of their points in the 10 minutes. Now, under Martin O'Neill, it is increasingly evident that their is an increased mental strength.
If Sunderland keep this new, mental character they seem to have developed, I would be very optimistic about their chances next season.
Queens Park Rangers: Let Adel Taarabt Go
16 of 20Adel Taarabt is not good enough for the Premier League. Queens Park Rangers should take the money they would receive and buy some players they can rely on.
Joey Barton will be happier anyway.
Wolves: Kevin Doyle to Start Scoring Goals
17 of 20Kevin Doyle is vitally important to Wolves' chances of survival, but if he was to start scoring goals, life would be a lot easier for Mick McCarthy.
Talk of Doyle being good enough to play top four has dissipated, mainly due to this lack of goals.
Wigan Athletic: Keep Hold of James McCarthy
18 of 20If Wigan were to lose James McCarthy in January, they would be a definite for relegation. Wigan's recent form runs parallel to McCarthy's form. He has been exceptional in midfield for the Northern club.
The Scotsman's stock could easily rise with a good performance in Euro 2012, and he could be gone to top-six club by the start of next season.
Bolton Wanderers: Drop the New 'Phil Brown'
19 of 20Owen Coyle is young and speaks well, but the talk of him becoming the next top manager is completely unfounded. Phil Brown got the same sort of talk while he was at Hull City.
It became quite fashionable to talk highly of Coyle last season, but this season shows that his rhetoric is simply idiotic. All talk, no show.
Blackburn Rovers: Supporters to Try Supporting
20 of 20The behavior of some Rovers fans in recent months has been nothing but abhorrent. When have fans become more than a club?
The most important person in a club is the manager. Even if the fans don't like him, they should still support the players. All Blackburn fans have been supporting is each other.
