College Football Recruiting: Is Nelson Agholor or Josh Harvey-Clemons Top ATH?

Edwin WeathersbyDec 23, 2011

The "ATH" label can be a gift and a curse. For some, it can mean they are an extremely versatile player that project to several different positions in college. For others, it can mean that evaluators have no idea where they're going to play in college.

For this read, I'm going to give you two players that have the ATH attached to their names in Nelson Agholor and Josh Harvey-Clemons.

Let's see who the top ATH is in this year's recruiting crop.

Who Is Nelson Agholor?

1 of 5

Agholor is regarded by many in the recruiting landscape as the most gifted and natural pure athlete in the country. He's from Florida and is a student at Berkely Prep in the Tampa area.

Standing 6'2" and weighing 180-pounds, Agholor can play WR, RB, DS, CB, LB and return kicks and punts. He shows excellent play speed, quick feet, natural instincts, great ball skills and just makes plays wherever he's at on the field.

On the recruiting front, Florida, Notre Dame, USC, Texas, Georgia, LSU and Michigan are just the tip of the iceberg for his offers list.

Who Is Josh Harvey-Clemons?

Harvey-Clemons is a prospect out of the Peach State that can do an array of things. He's from the Valdosta area in Georgia and is a sound football player.

Standing 6'4" and weighing 210-pounds, JHC doubles as a WR and as an OLB for his Lowndes High School squad. He has great quickness and speed to make plays on the flanks for his defense, but also flashes solid ball skills as a WR.

He seems to follow his assignments well, has solid instincts and is very, very coachable. Florida and Georgia are his top two, with Alabama and Florida State also in the mix.

Differences and Similarities

Both players have tall and long frames and good athleticism, and also could play some WR for you. But, in my opinion that's where the similarities stop.

Agholor is more of a perimeter player where he can use his speed and range to do what he wants. Harvey-Clemons, while he can play WR, on the other hand is more of an in-line or front seven type of player.

Where Do They Project in College?

For Harvey Clemons, it looks like OLB is where he's going to be best at. The only knock I have on him is his cover skills. He just doesn't have enough experience at it right now and will need to work on his drop and swivel technique.

For Agholor, WR is a possibility, but FS is where he should be deployed if you ask me. His ball skills, range and instincts are too good to not stick him in centerfield and tell him "read routes, bait the QB, then break on balls for picks."

Who's the Top ATH?

5 of 5

It's Agholor.

That's who I'd take because he can play more positions for your team and do more. Agholor is going to naturally add some weight and I think he has a chance to be a top tier safety in college.

Harvey-Clemons will be a solid OLB wherever he goes, but I'm going with the guy that is more naturally gifted and versatile, and that's Nelson Agholor.
