LSU vs. Indianapolis Colts: More "Talent" for LSU Would Not Equal Win

Rob GoldbergDec 23, 2011

Every year, it seems new teams are placed into the ridiculous discussion of whether an NCAA team can defeat an NFL team. The answer will always be no.

This season, the teams that are being compared are the undefeated LSU Tigers against the Indianapolis Colts, who only recently earned their first win.

LSU has had an outstanding season. The Tigers have defeated eight ranked teams on the way to a 13-0 season. Not only did the team win the SEC Championship, but it defeated the winners of the Big East and Pac-12 as well.

The No. 12 scoring offense and second-ranked defense allow LSU to outscore opponents by an average of 28 points per game.

Does this mean that it could defeat the 1-13 Colts? Not a chance.

LSU has numerous quality players who will eventually be playing on Sundays.

Most of America knows Heisman finalist Tyrann Mathieu by now, but the talent goes beyond one player.

Cornerback Morris Claiborne is expected to be a top-five pick in the 2012 NFL draft and should be be an elite player for years.

After that, linebacker Barkevious Mingo and safety Eric Reid will someday be impact players on professional rosters.

However, the difference between professional and college lies after that point.

Every single player on an NFL roster has proven that he is good enough to succeed at that level. The 53-man team consists of athletes who have proven their worth in the college ranks and beyond.

Even at the Colts' weakest position, quarterback, Dan Orlovsky or even Curtis Painter perform better than Jordan Jefferson ever could.

Realistically, the argument begins and ends with the battle in the trenches. There is no college defensive line that can stand up to an NFL offensive line, or vice versa.

Grown men who spend their entire lives getting into shape (college football players work hard, but nowhere near as much as a professional), will always be able to outmuscle a 20-year-old kid.

Probably the closest college team in recent memory to be able to compete with an NFL team was the University of Miami in 2001-2002.

There were 17 players from this roster who were eventually drafted in the first round.

Stars from that Hurricane roster include running backs Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee and Frank Gore, and receiving targets Jeremy Shockey and Andre Johnson. The defense included Ed Reed, Jonathan Vilma and Vince Wilfork.

If you created a team of these players after five or six years in the league, it more than likely would have been a quality NFL team.

However, an undisciplined group of star athletes under the age of 22 would have still lost to whatever professional team they would have played.

Miami was also weak on the line outside of Bryant McKinnie, further illustrating how important depth would be in a contest of this nature.

Players in the National Football League are the best of the best, and they go through a tougher training program than college athletes.

No college team would be able to defeat a professional team, not even LSU.
