Bill Conlin Scandal: 2 More Accusers Step Forward Against Philly Sportswriter
Prior to allegations from three women and one man that Philadelphia Daily News sports columnist Bill Conlin sexually abused them as children came out in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Conlin stepped down. Now, two more accusers have come forward.
According to the Associated Press, 50-year-old Linda Stella informed the Philadelphia Daily News that Conlin twice molested her at his home and additionally another unidentified woman came forward as well.
Conlin has now been accused by six people in total, five women and one man, of sexually abusing them in his New Jersey home in the 1970s. Regardless of whether the allegations are true or not, however, Conlin cannot be charged due to the statute of limitations expiring on the cases.
Conlin, who retired from the Daily News on Tuesday, was honored with the J.G. Taylor Spink Award this past summer at the Baseball Hall of Fame. The award is the highest honor given to members of the Baseball Writers of America.
There hasn't yet been any indication of how the allegations might affect Conlin's ownership of the award or his spot in the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame, but he has denied the accusations to this point.
Conlin joined the Daily News in 1965 and served as a Philadelphia Phillies beat writer before becoming a columnist in 1988. He further built his brand as a panel member on ESPN's The Sports Reporters television show.
