Arizona State vs. Boise State: Why Broncos Didn't Deserve a Better Bowl Game

Randy ChambersDec 22, 2011

The Boise State Broncos seem to be college football's favorite underdog. Every season, people try to make a case for why they deserve a chance in the national championship game.

This year, it is very hard to explain why they should compete for a national title. However, many believe they should at least be in a BCS bowl.

Tonight, the Broncos will take on the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Las Vegas Bowl.

It's not exactly the most exciting bowl game, let alone the one you want to participate in when it's your last collegiate game, like it is for so many Broncos tonight. That includes both star quarterback Kellen Moore and running back Doug Martin.

However, the truth is, the Broncos got what they deserve.

I know the same boring argument has been made several times before about how the Broncos don't play anybody, but they don't play anybody in the WAC. Sure, they played and beat a young Georgia team in Week 1, but that's it. The only other respectable team they played this season was TCU and they lost once again by a missed field goal.

Even the Horned Frogs underachieved this season by losing to SMU. They nearly lost to Louisiana Tech last night in their bowl game also.

Should they really have made a BCS bowl over a two-loss team that plays much tougher competition every week? I don't think so.

I don't agree that Virginia Tech should be in the BCS Sugar Bowl. However, at the same time, they do look more impressive than Boise State does.

The same argument that is being made for why Alabama shouldn't be in the national championship can be made for why Boise State shouldn't be in a better bowl game.

They didn't win their conference. It's really as simple as that.

What's more, the Broncos are in a conference that only includes eight teams and six of them finished with at least four losses.

"

"Everybody is just very tired of the BCS," Boise State head coach Chris Petersen said earlier this season. "I think that's the bottom line. Everybody is frustrated. Everybody doesn't really know what to do anymore. It doesn't make sense to anybody. I don't think anybody is happy anywhere."

"

I agree that the BCS does have it's flaws and should be looked at. However, putting a one-loss Boise State team in the BCS wouldn't do anything to fix it. It's also funny how every team that doesn't make a BCS bowl thinks the system is broken.

Were the Broncos saying this back in 2006 and 2009?

Boise State is that little team that everybody loves and it's sad to see a team full of seniors finish a bowl game in Las Vegas. However, under the current system that's in place, it's exactly where they belong.
