Floyd Mayweather Jail Time: What Better Way to Build Up Manny Pacquiao Fight?

Ryan RudnanskyDec 21, 2011

If HBO's 24/7 needed any more of a boost, it may have just gotten it.

On Wednesday, Floyd Mayweather Jr. pleaded guilty in a plea deal to misdemeanor assault and harassment charges and was sentenced to 90 days in jail, per TMZ.com.

The charges stemmed from an incident in September 2010 in which Mayweather allegedly hit and threatened his ex-girlfriend and threatened two of their children.

Mayweather also pleaded "no contest" to misdemeanor battery charges involving an incident with security guards regarding parking tickets outside his Las Vegas home in November 2010.

I can see the buildup to a Manny Pacquiao superfight now—Mayweather working out in jail, reciting poems, gearing up to burst free from jail en route to the "Fight of the Century" with Pacquiao.

What great TV that would be.

Pacquiao could taunt Mayweather outside of jail, bringing him flowers during visits and offering him his condolences in a sarcastic tone.

HBO's 24/7 series has made a living out of mixing fighters' preparation for bouts with plenty of drama, making it a reality TV show that can be riveting.

While some believe Mayweather's sentence will make talks die down between the two camps, I believe this is the chance for talks to get back on track and soar into a potential superfight.

After Mayweather's sentence, Pacquiao could build up the picture of good versus evil even more while Mayweather could talk trash behind bars, sneering all the while.

This isn't bad for boxing.

This is perfect.
