2012 National Signing Day: Updates on Biggest 5-Star Names
College football recruiting is heating up, and big-time schools continue to push hard to land some of the most talented recruits in the nation.
The top recruits available have tough decisions to make over the next couple of months, as their future is at stake. Some of them like to keep things a secret until National Signing Day in February, but others are quick to commit.
Even though some players may be verbally committed to one school, it doesn't necessarily mean they'll stay true to their word. Switching at the last minute is becoming a trend, so it will be interesting to see where the elite players end up when it's all said and done.
With that said, here are some updates on the biggest names available on the recruiting trail.
Dorial Green-Beckham, WR
1 of 5According to ESPN, Green-Beckham's top choices are Arkansas, Alabama, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas, although he's been very secretive about where he'll end up.
Rivals.com states the only school he's visited is Texas, which was back in early November.
According to Brian McLaughlin of Sporting News, Green-Beckham had to postpone his trip to Oklahoma because of basketball games. His father, John Beckham, told McLaughlin that Green-Beckham may not use his allotted five visits.
Listed at 6'6", 220 pound, Green-Beckham is the arguably the best prospect in the nation, and all eyes will continue to be on him.
Eddie Goldman, DT
2 of 5Regarded as the best defensive tackle in the country, Goldman's top schools are Alabama, Auburn, California, Florida State and Miami, according to Rivals.
He's visited Alabama, Auburn, Florida State and Miami, but also has a really good relationship with Cal defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi, who will have an impact in what he decides to do.
Listed at 6'4", 307 pounds, Goldman will have a bright future wherever he ends up. Should Alabama win the title, that too could weigh in on his decision.
Stefon Diggs, ATH
3 of 5Diggs has given no hints as to who is the favorite among his long list of schools, but ESPN says Florida has been a "quiet leader."
According to Casey Goldstein, Diggs told her he may not be making a trip to see the Gators because of their current situation of not having an offensive coordinators.
As the top overall athletes, Diggs has the skills to play as a defensive back, wide receiver or running back. I expect him to play offense and be used as both a receiver and a running back, similar to Percy Harvin.
Rivals.com has Diggs' top schools as Florida, Auburn, California, Michigan, Miami, Oklahoma, USC, Virginia Tech and Virginia. Although, it wouldn't surprise me if Ohio State makes a run at Diggs since Urban Meyer is easily persuading recruits.
It's easy to see that Diggs has a lot of thinking to do before he makes his decision. He should probably start by narrowing down that list, then things would be easier.
Landon Collins, S
4 of 5As the best safety in the class of 2012, Landon Collins top choices are LSU, Alabama Florida, Texas and Tennessee, according to ESPN.
LSU and Alabama are easily the front-runners, and it's not hard to see why. Rivals.com shows he visited both schools, and since he lives about half an hour from LSU, he's likely to land there.
The Tigers tend to dominate recruiting in the state of Louisiana, but Alabama is making a strong push.
He's supposed to make his decision on Jan. 5 at the Under Armour All-America Game, but he could end up changing his mind depending on who wins the title game.
Gunner Kiel, QB
5 of 5The best quarterback available (and who I think will end up as the best QB from the class of 2012), Kiel was originally committed to Indiana.
Once he saw how horrible Indiana was this season, he de-committed and the race was on. According to ESPN, his top choices are Arkansas, LSU, Notre Dame and Vanderbilt.
The SEC West would be even nastier than it already is if Kiel and Green-Beckham both ended up at Arkansas.
While accepting the Indiana Mr. Football trophy on Tuesday during a Columbus East basketball game, the fans started chanting "LSU," according to the Indianapolis Star.
The paper says he plans to have a decision made by Christmas. It's unsure when the 6'4", 215-pound QB will make the official announcement, but needless to say, some school will be getting a very nice present during the holidays.
