College Football Recruiting: Andrus Peat or D.J. Humphries, Who's the No. 1 OL?
The OL class this year is as strong as pretty much any class since college football recruiting has come to the forefront. There are OL studs up and down many Top 100 lists this year.
But like with anything, you have to decide who's the best. The two I really like are Andrus Peat and D.J. Humphries, as both are OT types that have a great amount of potential and physical tools.
Let's take a look at them.
Who Is Andrus Peat?
1 of 6Peat is a heady player who I think will be one of the types of OTs that sets his targets up two to three snaps down the line when he really gets coached up in college.
He's from Arizona and is the brother of Todd Peat, a DL at Nebraska. Andrus is a decorated player that is the top prospect from 'Zona.
On the recruiting front, Peat has nearly 40 offers but seems focused on the likes of Nebraska, USC, Florida State, Stanford and Texas.
Who Is D.J. Humphries?
2 of 6Humphries is the most naturally gifted and athletic OL in the country. He's from North Carolina and has started since he was a freshman.
What got Humphries on the map was his sophomore year, when he didn't allow a single sack all season. All Humphries did to follow that spectacular season was become an All-State selection as a junior and once again failed to allow a sack.
On the recruiting side of things, Humphries had offers from of the Carolina schools, Georgia, Tennessee and Auburn. Yet, Florida is where he's headed.
Andrus Peat Scouting Report
3 of 6Peat is a 6'7" OT that has jumped up to 305 pounds this year after finishing last year at 280-ish. Right now, he's the most complete OT in the country bar none.
Peat glows an excellent frame on the hoof, has great length to stay clean in his set, snap quickness off the ball, excellent feet to shadow, mirror, adjust and recover vs. speed rushers and shows great FBI.
He lacks strength and power to be a mauler in the run game and will stall vs. mass/power defenders that can anchor. He reminds so much of USC OT Matt Kalil and I think Peat will be an All-American in college.
D.J. Humphries Scouting Report
4 of 6Humphries is a naturally gifted and pure OT prospect that looks like a TE/DE playing on the offensive edges. He's 6'6" and weighs 270 pounds and has an excellent frame that will tack on another 30 pounds with simple ease.
Humphries has excellent snap quickness, "wow" foot quickness, natural knee bend and great balance. He's like a dancing bear in his sets and has no issues vs. speed/quick rushers. Humphries can wash out all day in the pocket and shadows as a pass protector.
Against the run, he has great second-level ability, flashes some strength and has the ceiling to be able to complete every block in the book down the road. He's a prep version of D'Brickashaw Ferguson.
Comparing and Contrasting
5 of 6In comparison, you have two tall and long-framed OLs that will be OTs in college. Each shows a great sense and skill set to be an elite pass protector. They aren't the strongest or nasty maulers that John Theus or Chrisian Westerman are, but they're fine.
In contrast, Peat is more complete right now. He's thicker and has a more complete game. Humphries is more athletic and has a higher ceiling, but lacks Peat's sound technique and FBI.
As I said before, both players have extremely bright futures and will be standouts in college and perhaps the NFL.
Who's No.1?
6 of 6Right now, it's Peat. He's more complete and could be ready to play right off the bat as a true freshman. Peat needs to add some strength and girth, but he's close to being a complete and polished OT.
But down the road, because of his natural athleticism and getting coached up, do not be shocked to see Humphries' skyscraper-high ceiling be reached and become the better OT a few years from now.
