Robert Griffin III: Heisman Winner's Father Smart to Control Agent Madness
With the sudden rush of super-stardom that has landed on the shoulders of Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III since his Heisman trophy win, it would be easy for the star to get distracted.
That is if Griffin’s father wasn’t taking the helm.
While Griffin concentrates on his upcoming Alamo Bowl appearance, his father has issued a stern warning to potential agents looking to persuade his son into doing anything without his family’s consent.
"Sources close to RG3's family tell TMZ, RG2 (aka Dad) has decided any agents who contact his son directly will be out of the running to sign him ... and thereby, screwed out of a future multi-million dollar commission. We're told Dad wants all the agents to contact him -- leaving RG3 alone to focus on next week's Alamo Bowl, and his Master's degree. Believe it or not, some reps are playing ball -- we're told Dad's talking to 5 big-time agents ... just in case RG3 goes pro.
"
While many people will view this as a parent controlling too much of their child’s life, there are very few people in this world you can trust. Your parents are supposed to be there for you no matter what, so if Griffin trusts his father, then this is fine.
Griffin is a student athlete who hasn’t decided to go pro next year or not, but that’s a decision he will make with his family when the time is right. Griffin’s father wants the decision to be his son’s alone and has made it clear that anyone who interferes will be excluded from the decision making process.
If one thing has become abundantly clear over the years of watching professional sports, it's that most of these star athletes mismanage their money. The fact that Griffin is already doing the right thing shows that he is smart enough to not screw this wonderful opportunity up.
With a strong family behind him and a bright future ahead of him, Griffin promises to be a big part of the NFL for a long time to come.
