College Football Recruiting 2102: Where Are the Top 10 Wide Receivers Headed?

Edwin WeathersbyDec 22, 2011

Here's the third edition of the WR board. It's condensed just to focus on the top perimeter pass catchers this year.

Teams know that if they strike gold on a big time receiver, their offense can soar to new heights.

Without anymore wait, here's the top 10 WRs in the country and also a look at where they are headed to play in college next fall.

10. Eugene Lewis

1 of 11

Lewis is a 6'2", 180-pounder who will see his mark mostly made in the intermediate passing game. He has the tools develop into a very good No. 2 receiver.

He works his routes well, sets up defenders and can break out quickly from cuts at the junction point. He won't "wow" you deep, but he can get by if he has to.

Lewis is headed to Penn State.

9. Avery Johnson

2 of 11

Johnson is the younger brother of LSU and Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson. At 6'2", 185 pounds, Johnson is not just riding his brother's coattails.

He's a super deep threat with a big frame who can do it all. Johnson is a great athlete with natural ball skills, and he can develop into an all-conference player.

LSU will get Johnson after all.

8. Jordan Payton

3 of 11

Payton is one of the best players in the country, but his recruitment is also one of the most interesting sagas as well.

At 6'2", 190 pounds, Payton is perhaps the best receiver in Southern California. He shows strong hands, solid route running and subtle separation quickness in his breaks.

Michigan, Notre Dame and Cal are his top three.

7. Chris Black

4 of 11

At 5'11", 175 pounds, Black is among the top receivers in Florida. He is a speedster who combines athletic ability with quickness.

His best skill is his RAC ability. Black can turn a quick slant into a 6-yard scamper and can be used on smokes, bubbles and reverses.

Black is headed to Alabama.

6. Ricardo Louis

5 of 11

Louis maybe has the most upside of any WR in this class. At 6'2', 200 pounds, he's a special athlete that has a ceiling very, very high.

He has excellent speed, leaping ability and quickness at his size. He just needs coaching and refinement on the finer points of the game, and he will be making big play after big play in college.

Which will be Auburn.

5. Durron Neal

6 of 11

At 6'0", 185 pounds, Neal has good speed, quickness and runs solid routes. He shows an ability to attack the football at its highest point and seems to always find a way to get more yards out of a catch than he should.

Oklahoma has him secured.

4. Dominique Wheeler

7 of 11

Wheeler is fantastic receiver prospect. At 6'1", 180 pounds, he shows a great skill set on the offensive flanks.

He has solid release quickness, eats cushion well, can stem a defender, can break in his routes and he has solid hands. Wheeler also displays solid speed to get vertical and behind a secondary.

He's headed to Texas Tech.

(T) 3. Shaq Roland

8 of 11

At 6'1", 180 pounds, Roland has played multiple spots, but receiver is his definite future home position in college. He just needs to spend more time there and get coached up.

Dynamic with the ball in his hands, Roland shows very good play speed and explosiveness. He isn't very strong, but can beat press with change of direction and quickness in his release. He flashes great separation quickness and solid hands.

Roland is headed to South Carolina.

(T) 3. Cayleb Jones

9 of 11

At 6'3", 190 pounds, Jones is among the top receivers in Texas, and the country.

Jones shows on tape that he is a player that understands he has a long frame, snatching balls all around him to increase his catch radius. He also shows solid quickness in and out of breaks, good route turning and an ability to catch in crowds.

He's bound for Texas.

2. Stefon Diggs

10 of 11

I've been tooting the Diggs horn for some time now, as the 6'0", 190-pounder is as versatile a player as there is in the country. Diggs may not time as a blazer in the 40, but something about giving him the ball and telling him to find the end zone makes him run as fast as anyone in the nation.

Diggs is a playmaker in every sense of the word. He has good release quickness, can sit his hips down in his breaks, cut on a dime and separate with ease. I also see solid hands and have him as the top RAC player in the country on my board.

Diggs has schools like Florida, Auburn, Oklahoma, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Michigan and USC after him.

1. Dorial Green-Beckham

11 of 11

DGB is a tall and long-framed athlete with an incredible strike zone. At 6'6", he clearly has the size to tower over defenders and is a natural terror in the red zone.

Yet he's also in the 220-pound range and runs the 40 in the 4.4 area. He's a phenomenal athlete, has great ball skills and shows a burst in and out of his breaks to gain separation. DGB also can shield a DB away from the ball, flashes pluck-ability and is very good as a RAC player.

Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas and Arkansas are schools to watch.
