NBA Trade Rumors: Rebuilding Suns Should Trade Steve Nash

Richard LangfordDec 20, 2011

The Phoenix Suns need to embrace the fact that they are going nowhere this year, and trade aging star point guard Steve Nash while he still have value.

Nash recently expressed his desire to remain a Sun, but this is not the best option for anyone.

Nash recently had in interview on KTAR in Phoenix with Burns and Gambo, and was asked if he wanted to finish his career with the Suns. Here is Nash's response, as quoted by Steven Cuce on Sports Radio Interviews:

"

Well that would be amazing to do that. I have been here for the majority of my career and had a ton of success here. This is home. I feel a part of the franchise and organization beyond just as a player, so it feels right. It feels like home and that would be great. I know the business is crazy and ever changing so you always gotta be prepared for whatever it may be, but yeah it would be great to finish my career [with the Phoenix Suns].

"

Why Phoenix must trade him

The Suns are not going to make the playoffs this year. They started dismantling this team last season, and have done nothing to upgrade this offseason.

They lost Aaron Brooks and Vince Carter and are replacing them with Sebastian Telfair and Shannon Brown.

Nash now has no scoring threats to dish the ball to.

The one player in the lineup that can consistently catch and shoot is Channing Frye. And Frye is going to be stuck at the power forward position where he is not as effective as he is at center.

The Suns are solid at center with Marcin Gortat and Robin Lopez, but they are not the kind of post players that will allow Nash to work an effective two man game.

This roster is not very talented, and the talent they do have does not fit well together.

Achieving the elusive win-win-win result

The Suns are not in a position to win any time in the near future. They need to embrace their rebuilding mode and ship off Nash while his value is at its highest point.

It is certainly commendable that Nash wants to stay in Phoenix, but he deserves better. Nash is still a high-end point guard, and he could be a very valuable piece to a contending team.

Nash needs one last shot at capturing a ring. In return, the Suns could get valuable pieces to help them build for the future, and whatever team he goes to would get an elite point guard.
