Chelsea FC Transfer Rumours: Gary Cahill and 5 Players Who Should Be Targeted
Andre Villas-Boas will be looking to improve Chelsea in the January transfer window.
The team has been inconsistent and coming off its worst performance of the year, it looks like the Blues are a long way from a trophy. With that said, they are still alive in three competitions. Depending on the players the Blues bring in, the squad could snag a trophy or two.
New players would mean new talent, as well as some depth. Accordingly, the Blues will be looking to add some solid players.
I have compiled a list of five players who have been linked to Chelsea in December. Not all of these players will end up in Chelsea blue, but a few of them could definitely help.
Gary Cahill
1 of 5Andre Villas-Boas is reportedly ready to offer £8 million for Gary Cahill.
The English international will most likely leave Bolton in the summer, and the Wanderers will want something in return while they can get something. Accordingly, Cahill is one of the most sought-after defenders in England.
Chelsea are hoping to bring in Cahill and partner him with John Terry. The two have looked good with England, and Villas-Boas would like to have a steadier back line than what he has right now. If Villas-Boas adds a Josh McEachran loan to the deal, Cahill will almost surely be wearing Chelsea blue by February.
He's a talented defender, and he would provide Chelsea with an all-English back line that can be counted on.
Diego Godin
2 of 5Slowly but surely, talks regarding Diego Godin are heating up.
According to London 24, Chelsea is among the suitors for Godin's services. His agent has said that multiple English giants are looking at the Uruguayan. He is a strong defender who has looked very impressive over the last year.
If Chelsea bring in Gary Cahill, Godin will most likely not come to West London. However, Andre Villas-Boas could decide to bring in another defender while trying to add depth to the centre-back position.
Chelsea will be playing a lot of matches over the next five months, and they will need to have fresh legs as often as possible. With so many competitions, injuries and fatigue begin to take their toll.
Godin would be a strong defender for the Blues, and more importantly, they would be able to keep him away from other EPL clubs.
Danijel Pranjic
3 of 5Danijel Pranjic would be a great addition to the Chelsea midfield.
Although he has not been able to solidify a starting role for Bayern Munich, he has been a regular for Croatia. He holds the midfield well and has the ability to distribute the ball. Even though Oriol Romeu has looked good in the holding position, Chelsea do not want to give him the starting role for good.
Michael Essien will be out for a while, and John Obi Mikel has been incredibly ineffective. With such unreliable players in the holding midfield role, Andre Villas-Boas would like to add another one.
According to Metro, Villas-Boas has listed Pranjic as a January target. In addition, Villas-Boas will most likely be able to purchase him for a discounted price, since Pranjic's contract will be up this summer.
It wouldn't hurt Chelsea to take a flyer out on Pranjic. He has a good skill set, experience and will not cost too much. It would make sense to try and bring the Croatian into West London.
Robinho
4 of 5Believe it or not, Robinho could be moving back to the EPL.
According to MirrorFootball, Robinho would return to England if AC Milan can bring in Carlos Tevez. Even though he wasn't a success at Manchester City, Robinho could find a home at Chelsea.
Andre Villas-Boas has been looking for a creative midfielder, and Robinho could bring that creativity. The Brazilian has played well since he arrived at AC Milan.
The Italian side won't be excited to let him go, but if they bring in Tevez, Robinho could be expendable. In fact, with Tevez coming in, Milan would have to part ways with another foreign player.
Robinho could be that man. If so, Chelsea could make a serious bid for him.
Cheick Tiote
5 of 5Cheick Tiote has played well for Newcastle United this year, and Chelsea may purchase him.
The Toon aren't inclined to part with the Ivorian, but Chelsea are still very interested. Tiote is happy at Newcastle, but that won't stop Andre Villas-Boas from trying to get him. The midfielder has played very well this year, and he has gotten the attention of the Chelsea boss.
Tiote would strengthen the questionable Chelsea midfield, and he would give them a player they could trust to dominate from one box to another. With Michael Essien out, Chelsea are in desperate need for that type of player.
Tiote would look good for Chelsea, but Alan Pardew has warned other clubs that a lot of money will be necessary to lure a Newcastle player away. Obviously, money is not too much of an issue for Chelsea. However, transfers are about value.
If Villas-Boas can purchase Tiote for a reasonable price, he should bring the Ivorian in.
