Big 12 Football: One Player Each Team Will Miss the Most in 2012-13
This year's Big 12 was one of the best football conferences in the country, despite losing Nebraska and Colorado to different conferences. Each team will have key players to replace heading into next season.
Some players may leave early, but even apart from those, each team has a senior that they will be desperately missing when next season begins. Here's that guy for each team in this year's Big 12.
(As mentioned above, this list is restricted to seniors. No juniors are on this list.)
Oklahoma State: Brandon Weeden
1 of 10The 28-year-old senior quarterback has thrown for over 8,500 yards and 65 touchdowns in the last two seasons. He is one of the biggest reasons that the Oklahoma State Cowboys are a top-10 team.
Weeden will be one of the most missed players in all of college football.
Oklahoma: Ryan Broyles
2 of 10How missed will Ryan Broyles be? During the last three games of the season without the injured Broyles, the Oklahoma Sooners went 1-2 and Landry Jones did not throw a single touchdown pass.
Broyles holds multiple career receiving records. The 5'10" receiver has caught 349 passes for 4,586 yards and 45 touchdowns. Not to mention the guy has been one of the best punt returners in college football.
Texas: Emmanuel Acho
3 of 10Emmanuel Acho was one of the best defensive players in the Big 12 last year. He was second in the league with 102 total tackles and had three sacks and a forced fumble.
Acho will follow his brother into the NFL this season, leaving a big void in that Texas defense.
Missouri: Luke Lambert
4 of 10Luke Lambert is a name few have heard of; Missouri Tiger fans are among those few.
Lambert led the Tigers in forced fumbles, fumble recoveries and tackles for loss and was a big piece of a very underrated defense. This team is fairly young so they won't lose much, but they will lose this guy.
Not ideal heading into the SEC.
Texas A&M: Ryan Tannehill
5 of 10A converted wide receiver, Ryan Tannehill will be receiving an NFL paycheck this time next year, leaving his Texas A&M Aggies to find a new quarterback.
The quarterback threw for over 4,000 yards and 41 touchdowns in the past two seasons (one of which was abbreviated). He also rushed for nearly 300 yards and four scores this season.
Tannehill was the soul of this offense. The Aggies will be missing him as they try to find a new soul while moving to the SEC.
Baylor: Terrance Ganaway
6 of 10Most would probably be Kendall Wright here, but Terrance Ganaway has been woefully overlooked on this Baylor squad (which is to be expected when you share a team with a Heisman Trophy winner and a first-round-caliber wide receiver).
Ganaway rushed for 1,347 yards and 16 touchdowns this season. Despite how good Robert Griffin III is, he couldn't have had the season he did without this guy beside him in the backfield.
Baylor will miss this guy, whether Griffin leaves early or not.
Kansas: Steven Johnson
7 of 10I cannot lie: This was a tough one. Kansas was one of the worst teams in the country this year, and you'd think they'd be fine with anyone leaving. Not this guy.
Steven Johnson, another guy that no one had heard of. He led the Big 12 in tackles this season and was a big part of any semblance of defense that the Jayhawks could muster.
The loss of Johnson is just another bad omen for this team.
Kansas State: No One
8 of 10Kansas State is coming off an impressive year. They finished second in the Big 12 at 10-2 and are losing no one that they'll miss.
That's a scary thought for the rest of the league. Kansas State will probably be a favorite for the league crown next season.
Texas Tech: Adam James
9 of 10Adam James is the only skill position player of even the least significance that Texas Tech is losing this season. The senior wideout had 32 catches for 359 yards and a touchdown this season, which made him the third option at wide receiver.
Truthfully, it might be best that James is leaving. He and his family ran off the best coach in Texas Tech history. Plus, this will give him time to help his dad with his political campaign.
Iowa State: No One
10 of 10Much like Kansas State, Iowa State isn't losing any significant players to graduation. This young team fought to get to 6-6 in a very tough league. Their season was highlighted with a huge win over then-No. 2 Oklahoma State.
It's no wonder Paul Rhoads signed a 10-year extension. This team isn't losing anyone for awhile.
