The Best and Worst College Football Uniforms of 2011, Final Edition

Drew LaingDec 19, 2011

2011 has a been an electrifying year for college football.

We have seen games come down to a Hail Mary pass as time expires, another season-ending BCS controversy and some impressive individual performances from players like Robert Griffin III and Tyrann Mathieu.

But this year of college football was also characterized by the unique uniforms of various college football teams.

Immediately, the state pride jerseys of Maryland and the brand new Nike Pro Combat jerseys come to mind, but there were so many other schools that showed off other unique uniform combinations.

Here are the best and worst uniforms from the 2011 college football season.

Best: Wyoming's New Look

1 of 10

I'm sure many college football fans aren't aware of the Wyoming football team, but the Cowboys had brand-new jerseys this season.

Brown and yellow are never a flattering combination, but I mark them in the "best" category just for the attempt at making these colors a formidable jersey combination.

You really have to feel for the Cowboys as they have to sport the brown-and-yellow combo week in and week out. They really make brown and yellow look as best as they possibly can together.

Best: Oregon's 2011 Nike Pro Combat

2 of 10

I have always been a fan of the different Oregon uniform choices. The combinations of green, black, silver and white have always struck me as some of the best uniforms in the nation.

When the Ducks unveiled their new Nike Pro Combat uniforms against LSU on the opening weekend of the season, their jerseys immediately shot up my list of my favorites in 2011.

The all-black look is just a clean, sleek look for the Ducks. Not to mention, the highlighter-color gloves that formed the Oregon "O" were also a a nice accent to the all-black uniforms.

These new Nike Pro Combat jerseys were my new favorite of Oregon's multiple jersey combinations, and opponents certainly got a good look at them this season as they were trying to catch the speedsters on Oregon.

Worst: The Power Ranger Red for Georgia

3 of 10

When I first saw these new Georgia uniforms I immediately thought of the red Power Ranger from back in my childhood days.

The uniform itself wasn't that bad, but the helmet just ruined the whole package. The uniform choice would have been much better if they could have decided on just one color, rather than two different colors. An all-silver helmet would have been a really sharp look for the Georgia Bulldogs.

At least Georgia would have looked better in their loss against Kellen Moore and the Broncos.

Best: Any Oklahoma State Uniform in 2011

4 of 10

Before the season, Oklahoma State unveiled several new uniform combinations that brought a brand-new look to an up-and-coming football program.

The combinations included all-black, all-silver, all-white and an orange jersey with black pants combination. I thought every one of these new uniforms were a big hit.

My personal favorite was the orange-and-black combination that is pictured above. It combined the striking black color of Oklahoma State with the bright orange that has always helped Oklahoma State stand out.

And when you have a player like Justin Blackmon wearing your jerseys, that definitely doesn't hurt either.

Worst: Michigan State Spartan Green

5 of 10

I have always enjoyed Michigan State's uniforms with the classic green and white. It was simple, but yet traditional and historic.

However, when they debuted new uniforms against Michigan earlier in the season, I was not a fan of the new look.

There was just too many colors on the jersey that didn't go well together. The dark green, along with the gold and black, was too much. I applaud Michigan State for taking a chance by getting away from their traditional colors, but unfortunately it was a risk that wasn't rewarded.

Best: White Bronco

6 of 10

Nike's Pro Combat jersey for Boise State was one of the best in college football this season.

The all-white uni gave a very unique look to a Bronco team that normally just wears blue or some combination of blue and white.

I heard a lot of opinions about the helmets with just a large Bronco on the side and many were negative. Even though it was a simple design, it looked really sharp in accenting the rest of the uniform.

Of course, if Boise State would have lost against Georgia in these jerseys, maybe they wouldn't have looked as good.

Regardless, I think it's a look that the Broncos should continue in the future.

Worst: Throwback Michigan

7 of 10

Against Notre Dame the Michigan Wolverines attempted to go with a throwback look in the first night game in University of Michigan history.

Although the team pulled out the victory, the throwback uniforms weren't as much of a success in my eyes.

The numbers in the corner along with the large "M" on the jersey seemed too crammed. In addition, the checkered pattern along the shoulders looked awkward and just didn't look very good.

Best: Notre Dame's Throwback

8 of 10

In contrast to Michigan's uniforms on that night, Notre Dame's throwbacks were a much better look for the Fighting Irish.

The green on the jersey wasn't too bright or too dark. And the clover on the helmet was a nice touch to the traditional golden helmet.

The new look for the Irish was more refreshing than anything.

Best: Arizona State's All-Black Uniforms Are a Hit

9 of 10

Even though Arizona State's season wasn't as successful as fans hoped it would be, the newest addition of the all-black uniforms could have been the best-looking uniform in the entire college football season.

For a team nicknamed the "Sun Devils," the all-black uniforms, in my opinion, went a long way in intimidating the opponent.

Combine these jerseys with a "Black Out" in the Arizona State crowd and you have a raucous stadium atmosphere.

Worst: Maryland's State Pride

10 of 10

The award for the worst uniforms of the year go to the Maryland Terrapins.

In an attempt to show some state pride, someone at Maryland thought it would be a good idea to display the Maryland state flag on the jerseys of the Terrapin football team...on live television.

It's tough to know where to even begin in discussing these jerseys, but I believe the stark contrast in the black and yellow side of the jersey and the white and red side of the jersey is enough.

I understand the initial idea, but actually bringing it to fruition was a huge mistake on Maryland's part. This is a jersey that's tough to look at for all 60 minutes of a football game.
