Ward vs. Froch: S.O.G Will Remain Undefeated with Win Over Toughest Test Yet
After more than two years of setbacks and missteps, the Super Six World Boxing Classic Final is set to take place on Saturday between undefeated WBA (Super) Middleweight Champion Andre "S.O.G. Ward" and WBC (Super) Middleweight Champion Carl "The Cobra" Froch.
The tournament was created in an effort to unify the titles, as well as the vacant The Ring (Super) Middleweight Championship. Both men have gone through a series of bouts over the past couple years and are finally ready to settle things once and for all.
While Froch is certainly a great fighter in his own right, I believe Ward has all the tools to come out on top in this fight. Ward has run the gauntlet during this tournament, beating every one of his opponents with relative ease, while Froch technically shouldn't even be in this match.
Froch was actually eliminated when he lost to Mikkel Kessler by unanimous decision in 2010. After Kessler was forced to drop out, however, Froch defeated Arthur Abraham easily for the WBC title.
Ward, who is also an Olympic gold medalist, had no problem in stopping Kessler in the 11th round during their meeting. While many of his fights tend to go to the scorecards, they are rarely close, as his fantastic quickness and underrated punching power put on a great show for the judges.
Froch may only have one loss, but I believe that the defeat against Kessler certainly caused him to lose some of his luster. Froch is still a very dangerous opponent, as his 20 knockouts in 28 wins would suggest, but it is so difficult to consistently contact Ward that I don't know how much his pop will come into play.
The fight will take place in Atlantic City, N.J., so Ward will have the home-country advantage. That may seem insignificant, but Froch has let that type of thing bother him in the past. His loss to Kessler took place in Kessler's home country of Denmark, and Froch suggested the outcome would have been different in England.
Because of that, the locale of the fight might be in the back of Froch's mind. Ultimately, while Froch is extremely talented, Ward is simply one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world at the moment.
This one should go to the scorecards, as neither competitor has ever been knocked out, but I think Ward will win quite handily—as he has continually done throughout his career.
