NFL Week 15 Predictions: Projecting the Week's Most Dominant Receivers

John RozumDec 16, 2011

Although it's late it the season, that doesn't necessarily mean a stud wide receiver is going to get shutdown. Sure some invariable elements such as location and weather conditions can play a part, but it's still not guaranteed.

That being said, the play-making ability of the following dominant wide receivers should never be discounted, therefore here are the best wide receiver performers of Week 15.

Brandon Marshall, Miami (at Buffalo)

1 of 4

According to Manny Navarro of The Miami Herald, it appears that Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore will suit up on Sunday:

"

"Matt Moore, who sustained a mild concussion in Sunday’s loss to the Eagles, according to Dolphins interim coach Todd Bowles, returned to practice on a limited basis Thursday and sounded optimistic about playing Sunday."

"

That said, even if Moore doesn't play Brandon Marshall will still have a field day when given the opportunity, and he should get a good amount. For one, the Miami run game has become established the past few weeks so that will help take pressure off the passing game.

And with the Bills being a vulnerable pass defense (rank No. 16, 232 per game) as they were when the two teams met earlier this season, Marshall will play well.

First, he's arguably Miami's best weapon. With Reggie Bush doing work on the ground, it's only going to open up the playbook. Now, if Moore does play, that would then just increase the odds of Marshall rolling.

Buffalo's defense was good at forcing turnovers, but not against a player like Brandon Marshall who can stretch the field and is better than any of their defensive backs. Hence, he'll beat single coverage every time.

A.J. Green, Cincinnati (at St. Louis)

2 of 4

Despite being a rookie, Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green has played quite well even against some of the NFL's toughest defenses.

With not much of a ground game to help open up the passing game, Green's presence has definitely stretched the field and defenses have overlooked him because of his rookie status.

Well, this week that won't matter against St. Louis. The Rams may have the No. 8 pass defense, but that's only because no one bothers to throw the ball against them. St. Louis ranks dead last against the run, so opposing offenses have no need to throw the ball.

Fortunately for Cincinnati, the Bengals have that solid luxury with fellow rookie quarterback Andy Dalton. He and Green are a great connection and they're definitely one of the best the Rams have seen this season.

Whether it's single coverage or double with a safety over the top, Green's proven the ability to undercut the safety but get over top of the cornerback at the same time. It's that rare soft spot/small window catch you don't see too many rookies make.

Expect big things from Green in Week 15.

Calvin Johnson, Detroit (at Oakland)

3 of 4

Arguably the best wide receiver in the game, regardless of how many possessions the Lions get in Week 15, Calvin Johnson will soar over the Oakland Raiders and their No. 18 ranked pass defense.

Now, we can't expect Megatron to get too many targets as Oakland needs to double-team him if they want any shot at slowing down the Lions offense. Also, the Raiders will run the ball all day to kill the clock and keep Detroit's offense off the field.

Nonetheless, Johnson will perform because he's good enough to beat double coverage by outrunning, jumping, and muscling any Oakland defensive back. Not to mention quarterback Matt Stafford has a strong enough arm to hit him deep at any time.

In addition to Calvin's ability to stretch the field, he's also a reliable target across the middle and on the outside. If a back shoulder toss is needed, Johnson can make the catch and his size allows him to take the brunt hits over the middle.

He will be utilized everywhere on literally every possession.

Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona (vs. Cleveland)

4 of 4

Right now, the Cleveland Browns are ranked No. 2 in pass defense compared to Arizona's No. 20 ranked pass offense.

The Browns will be able to shut down virtually everyone on the Cardinals offense, except Larry Fitzgerald. Fitz, even if double-covered will beat Cleveland every time.

He has arguably the best hands in the game. If the Browns do try single coverage, well, he'll just dominate even more. It also doesn't help much that Arizona has an improved ground game compared the Cleveland's abysmal rush defense.

In turn, that will setup Fitzgerald for anywhere on the field and although Browns cornerback Joe Haden is solid, he's not yet proven enough to blanket Larry Fitzgerald one-on-one. The red zone is where Fitzgerald will be most dangerous for the Cardinals as the fade route allows him to out-jump anyone on the field.

Plus, even if he gets a crossing pattern Larry has shown the ability to outrun any defender. Perhaps Fitzgerald's acceleration and top speed is his most underrated attribute.
