Week 15 Start 'Em, Sit 'Em: Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Atlanta Falcons

John MillerDec 15, 2011

Thursday night games are very interesting for fantasy owners. If you come out of Thursday night in good shape (your players did well and/or your opponent's players did lousy), you feel like you are most definitely going to win this week. If you come out of Thursday night in less-than-ideal shape (your players did lousy and/or your opponent's players did well) you will feel like you're screwed this week.

And guess what? There's absolutely nothing you can do about this. It's just how it works. Before we break down Thursday night's game, let's look at a couple of things you need to remember about Thursday night games:

  1. If you're not planning on starting players you own that are playing on Thursday night, remember you will not be able to drop these players for the remainder of the week. So, if you're going to need to cut, say, Harry Douglas, to open up a roster spot, you need to do it before the game on Thursday.
  2. If you're starting a RB and/or WR in this game, remember to play him in the RB or WR spots. If your league uses a RB/WR flex position, you want to keep that position open. That will give you flexibility to start a RB or WR. It's always advisable to leave yourself with as many options as possible.
  3. Do not start a player in this game just because you want to have a player in action on Thursday. Trust me on this. If you really need to be involved in the game tonight, try one of the sites that offers weekly fantasy contests.

Overall, it's pretty simple. Now let's take a look at how the Thursday night matchup between the Falcons and Jaguars breaks down for fantasy owners.

These are players whom you should start. If a player is not listed, I would not advise starting him. If you have any questions about players not listed, please use the comments feature.

Atlanta Falcons

Matt Ryan—Expect Ryan to tear up a Jaguars secondary that has been decimated by injuries and wasn't that good to begin with. The only thing that could really slow Ryan down is the Falcons jumping out to a big lead and then going to the running game. Expect at least top-10 fantasy numbers from Ryan this week, if not top-seven.

Michael Turner—I'm not expecting a superstar game from Turner here. The Jaguars run defense has been above average and Turner does not have the explosiveness he once possessed. Still, expect Turner to see 20 carries and it's perfectly reasonable to expect 80 yards and a TD.

Roddy White—Of course you're starting White. But be warned, if he doesn't score a TD, I wouldn't expect a huge game. Just expect WR2 production as opposed to the WR1 production you've received the past few games.

Julio Jones—Jones is already a better version of DeSean Jackson, which makes him a lower-class-man's Mike Wallace. Jones can make an excellent fantasy day out of two or three catches. And he's receiving eight to 10 targets per week. There's a high probability Jones scores another long TD this week.

Tony Gonzalez—Gonzalez has been a top-three TE in most formats this season and he's been a PPR monster especially recently. He should catch at least five passes and he has an excellent chance of finding the end zone.

Falcons D/ST—Despite the Jaguars offensive outburst against the Buccaneers in Week 14, the Jaguars have unable to score points. Rookie QB Blaine Gabbert does not look good at all. If you can slow down Maurice Jones-Drew, the Jaguars aren't going to generate points on offense. And while they're at it, they will give up sacks and turn the ball over.

Matt Bryant—Bryant is an accurate kicker and he's at home in the dome. The Falcons are expected to move the ball easily on offense and score a bunch of points. Sounds good to me.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Maurice Jones-Drew—This is a very tough matchup. The Jaguars are in the dome in Atlanta and the Falcons have a top-five run defense. But Jones-Drew is all the Jaguars have on offense. He should see at least 20 touches, and if anybody scores a TD for Jacksonville, odds are it will be him. Just don't expect another monster game like in Week 14.

Sorry, but starting any Jaguar on offense not named Maurice Jones-Drew is getting too cute, especially during the playoffs. And yes, it's pretty much "start all of your Falcons." Sometimes the obvious answers are correct.
