January Transfer Window: 10 Craziest Rumours We've Heard so Far

Michael CummingsDec 14, 2011

Not every transfer rumour turns out to be true, but some are just plain ridiculous.

We've got 10 of those rumours right here. When the transfer window opens back up in January, some of these players could be on the move. But they won't be going where these stories claim they're going.

Why not? See for yourself and you'll agree.

David Villa to Aston Villa

1 of 10

So David Villa is facing some competition for a spot in Barcelona's first XI.

That doesn't mean he's going to leave the club.

And even if he does, would he really trade Barcelona for Aston Villa?

Where would you rather be? On the bench in Barcelona, or playing in Birmingham?

Sorry, Villa fans. It ain't going to happen.

David Villa to Liverpool

2 of 10

OK, so this is a little more realistic.

Liverpool are a historic club, and they have some world-class players.

But David Villa isn't going to Liverpool. Seriously, he isn't leaving Barcelona.

David Villa to Chelsea for Fernando Torres

3 of 10

This is the most realistic of the unholy trinity of David Villa rumours.

Since being bought by Roman Abramovich, Chelsea always have a load of cash to spend. And they've used it to bring world-class players to London.

But it's still not happening. Why would Barca want Fernando Torres? That guy has been out of sorts for months.

Again, it's completely unrealistic to think David Villa would leave Barcelona at this point.

Not happening.

Karim Benzema to Arsenal

4 of 10

Karim Benzema is being linked with a move to Arsenal.

Benzema is French, so a move to Arsenal to play for Arsene Wenger would make some sense. But that's not the problem.

Benzema is in favor at Real Madrid. It's unrealistic to think Jose Mourinho would sell him.

Raul to Fulham

5 of 10

Raul reinvigorated his career with a stellar campaign at Schalke last season.

So, of course, his name popped up in the rumour columns over a supposed move to Fulham.

But this rumour was so ridiculous that even The Sun (among others) felt the need to shoot it down.

Carlos Tevez to Spurs

6 of 10

Some media outlets in England are claiming that Tottenham are in the running for Manchester City's Carlos Tevez.

The more serious pundits have shot that bit of nonsense down decisively.

Wayne Rooney to Anywhere

7 of 10

According to unspecified "reports" passed along here, Real Madrid are planning a £70 million move for Manchester United's Wayne Rooney.

Yeah, right.

Does anyone actually believe that?

Didier Drogba to AC Milan

8 of 10

Leave it to The Sun. They come up with the most comical ideas.

They know Drogba is 33, right?

Kolo Toure Back to Arsenal

9 of 10

Manchester City has become a haven for former Arsenal players in recent seasons.

A few examples: Samir Nasri, Patrick Vieira, Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure.

Back in October, Toure was linked with a move back to Arsenal (here and here).

Anyone really believe that would happen?

Frank Lampard to Real Madrid

10 of 10

Finally, here's another gem from The Sun.

Frank Lampard to Real Madrid for a reunion with Jose Mourinho.

Commence laughing.
