Super 6 Boxing Classic Final Could Turn into Brawl

Richard SmithDec 14, 2011

England’s Carl Froch goes into Saturday night’s Super Six Boxing Classic finale against undefeated American Andre Ward in a very confident mood believing that he will emerge victorious despite the fight being staged in Atlantic City. On the line will be Ward’s WBA and Froch’s WBC Super Middleweight titles.

Although this fight has been effectively staged by the Super Six organisers where the two protagonists had to qualify to reach the final, it is the super middleweight fight that many want to see.

That said, Froch only remained in the tournament courtesy of the withdrawal of Dane Mikkel Kessler, who had beaten Froch 14 months ago on points but later withdrew from the tournament through injury. Kessler is the only man to have beaten Froch in 29 fights.

Meanwhile, Ward, in order to one-up ahead of this bout, made it clear to all that he had beaten Kessler by technical decision when the two met in Oakland, California in 2009, and that he remains unbeaten in 24 fights in which he has scored 13 knock outs or stoppages.

The 27-year-old American who calls himself, somewhat blasphemously, the "Son of God" will start the fight as the clear favorite to win while Froch, who is now 34, is the underdog to take the two titles home to England.

“I’ll be trying to hit Andre Ward in the face very hard and very often” is the tactic that Froch has stated he'll use in the fight, believing that the American will not enjoy being dragged into a real punch up.

He has also gone to America in the past and won against the odds. His epic last-round stoppage, when behind on points against Jermaine Taylor in April 2009, is testimony to that.

In that fight, the "Cobra" showed that he not only has great boxing ability but he is a hard hitting and very determined boxer, who will be totally unfazed by Ward. Importantly, Froch has also confirmed that he is in the best shape of his life and of the two, it is him who seems the most sure of himself.

Former Olympic middleweight champion Ward has clearly progressed with every fight, but he has found it hard to put better quality opponents away. His last three fights have all gone the 12-round distance. To win against Froch, it is likely that he will have to go the full route once more.

There is little doubt that Ward will adopt a boxing policy; he is fast, skillful and has good energy levels and being the younger man, he should have the advantage. His main aim, however, will be to avoid being dragged into a brawl with the Brit fighter, where he would almost certainly be second best.

This is a hard to fight to predict, but Froch is the more experienced of the two at this level. His confidence ahead of the fight seems to carry a strong message, and where Amir Khan failed last weekend, Froch can go one better and head back across the Atlantic as a champion.
