Why Leslie Frazier Should Be Fired, Not Endorsed by Minnesota Vikings

Ryan PhillipsDec 14, 2011

The Minnesota Vikings are 2-11 and could be headed for the worst season in franchise history. Despite that, head coach Leslie Frazier has received a public vote of confidence and now claims that he has been told privately that he will be back in 2012.

This is a shocking development to me because I thought for sure Frazier would be gone at the end of this season. During his time with the team, the 52-year-old head coach boasts a record of 5-14, which simply isn't good enough for a team with as much talent as the Vikings.

Frazier seems like a nice enough guy, but he clearly isn't inspiring any type of heroic effort from his players. After taking over for Brad Childress in the middle of last season, Frazier guided Minnesota to a 3-3 record to finish the season. That wasn't terrible.

However, this year, many expected the Vikings to make a push for the postseason. They brought in veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb and hoped he could step in and guide the team to victories immediately. Obviously that was an absolute disaster and the team turned things over to rookie Christian Ponder before dumping him this past weekend to give Joe Webb a shot against the Detroit Lions.

This hasn't all been Frazier's fault. Nevertheless, if I was a Vikings fan, I'd be pretty ticked off at this development. The team can do better than Frazier and should strive to do so.

This may actually have less to do with the team's current coach and more to do with the fact that Minnesota still owes Childress about $5 million through the 2012 season. Frazier's job may have been saved by the contract of the guy who he replaced.
