Nebraska Cornhuskers May Lose out on Top Recruit
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are not having much luck following their last game against Iowa.
Since the Cornhuskers' last game on November 25, Nebraska has lost its defensive coordinator, Carl Pelini, to Florida Atlantic, and their top defensive recruit, linebacker Deion Jones, to LSU.
Today, Brandon Vogel of CBSSports.com is reporting Nebraska star offensive recruit, wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp, is considering changing his commitment from the Cornhuskers to Notre Dame. Vogel reports that Westerkamp will visit Notre Dame and listen to what they have to say.
This will be a big lost for Nebraska on the recruiting trail. Westerkamp was recently named Illinois High School Football Player of the Year. Westerkamp is the Illinois career leader in receiving yards (4,024) and touchdowns (61). Westerkamp could step right into the Cornhuskers offense next year and give quarterback Taylor Martinez the go-to wide receiver he has been missing.
With Westerkamp possibly changing his mind about attending Nebraska, the question must be asked: What is going on at Nebraska?
Do the Cornhuskers have any recruiting coaches that can bring in the top talent that Nebraska will need to compete for the conference championships?
The decommitment of Deion Jones was obvious. He wanted to play for LSU all along, but was never offered a scholarship. As soon as the Tigers offered, Jones decommitted from Nebraska and changed to LSU.
If Westerkamp decommits, I have to imagine that the Nebraska coaching staff will be shocked. If there was a sure thing in Nebraska’s 2012 recruiting class, it was Westerkamp. The news that he is visiting Notre Dame must be surprising.
Nebraska does have some young talent at the wide receiver position in Kenny Bell, Jamal Turner and Quincy Enunwa. Nebraska’s would have had depth at the wide receiver position with the addition of Westerkamp. If he attends Notre Dame next fall, Nebraska will have playmakers at the wide receiver position, but they will not be able to afford any injuries at the position.
Time is running out on the Cornhuskers in the 2012 recruiting class. I am sure Coach Bo Pelini and his staff is pounding the pavement looking for top talent. Let’s just hope the talent Nebraska already has committed to the University stays true to their word.
