Amir Khan: Controversy Can't Hide King Khan's Peasant-Like Performance

Brian MaziqueDec 11, 2011

What is easily lost in the fact that Amir Khan was robbed with two questionable point deductions is his lackluster performance.

Khan's defense was terrible, and he showed a clear problem dealing with Peterson's pressure. He resorted to pushing Peterson away to get space, as he didn't know how to move laterally to create better punching angles.

This performance showed me that Tim Bradley would likely muscle and bully Khan out of a decision. In a way, one of two blueprints to beat Khan were written in this fight.

Gameplan No. 1

Pressure, pressure, pressure

Keep your head low, barreling it into Khan's chest. The opposing fighter must have a good chin, but Khan's long arms and remedial footwork worked against him against Peterson. He could not find the angle to land effective uppercuts.

Marcos Rene Maidana started this trend and nearly defeated Khan, Peterson completed it, with help from the referee.

Gameplan No. 2

Look for the big shot

Khan's chin must still be considered questionable. Breidis Prescott landed the one hitter quitter on Khan in his only defeat. Maidana dazed and nearly stopped him, and if Peterson possessed more power, he could have removed all controversy from his victory.

Khan's defense will give you an opportunity. Big punchers will have better than a punchers chance to defeat Khan.

Controversy aside, King Khan was less than royalty against Lamont Peterson.
