Bowl Games 2011: Schedule, Ticket Information, Radio, TV Schedule, Predictions

With college football's regular season now complete, the postseason will kick off this weekend with three bowl games scheduled to be played on December 17.  

The action will conclude with the BCS National Championship game on January 9 when No. 1 LSU faces No. 2 Alabama in New Orleans.  

Here is everything you need to know for all 35 bowl matchups, including schedule, ticket information, radio, TV and predictions.  

New Mexico Bowl

Matchup:  Wyoming (8-4, Mountain West) vs. Temple (8-4, MAC)

Where:  University Stadium, Albuquerque, New Mexico

When:  Saturday, Dec. 17 at 2:00 p.m. EDT

Wyoming makes a return trip to Albuquerque after representing the Mountain West in this bowl in 2009, winning 35-28 over Fresno State in double overtime. 

Temple and first-year head coach Steve Addazio bring in one of the nation’s finest running backs in Bernard Pierce, whose 25 rushing touchdowns rank second to only Wisconsin’s Montee Ball. 

Prediction:  Temple 31, Wyoming 27

Idaho Potato Bowl

Matchup:  Utah State (7-5, WAC) vs. Ohio (9-4, MAC)

Where:  Bronco Stadium, Boise, Idaho

Utah State shook off a 1-3 start to make it to the program’s first bowl game since 1997.  The Aggies bring a five-game winning streak into this contest.

Ohio is led by its all-purpose threat in quarterback Tyler Tettleton, who threw for over 3,000 yards and ran for over 600 more.  The Bobcats fell in the MAC championship game by three points to Northern Illinois. 

Prediction:  Ohio 34, Utah State 24

New Orleans Bowl

Matchup:  Louisiana-Lafayette (8-4, Sun Belt) vs. San Diego State (8-4, Mountain West)

Where:  Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana

The Ragin’ Cajuns will make the short trek to New Orleans for their program’s first bowl appearance in 41 years, and should enjoy a decided home crowd advantage.

First-year head coach Rocky Long took over for the departed Brady Hoke, and the Aztecs have continued their program’s resurrection under his guidance. The school will make consecutive bowl appearances for the first time in school history.

Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl

Matchup:  Florida International (8-4, Sun Belt) vs. Marshall (6-6, Conference USA)

Where:  Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida

When:  Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 8 p.m. EDT

FIU is looking for its second consecutive bowl win after beating Toledo in thrilling fashion in last season’s Little Caesars Bowl. The Golden Panthers may be without one of the nation’s best playmakers in wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, who is nursing a hamstring injury. 

Marshall had to win its last two games to become bowl-eligible under second-year head coach Doc Holliday.  The Thundering Herd boast one of the nation’s top defensive ends in senior Vinny Curry, who has 11 sacks this season. 

Prediction:  FIU 27, Marshall 14

Poinsettia Bowl

Matchup:  TCU (10-2, Mountain West) vs. Louisiana Tech (8-4, WAC)

This game will feature a duel between the champions of the WAC and the Mountain West Conferences. 

TCU, which fell short of a BCS at-large bid, comes in riding a seven-game winning streak.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs won the WAC for the first time in a decade under the direction of second-year head coach Sonny Dykes. 

Prediction:  TCU 38, Louisiana Tech 17

Maaco Las Vegas Bowl

Boise State, another non-AQ school with a strong resume that was left out of the BCS, will make its second consecutive trip to Las Vegas for the postseason.

The Sun Devils come in amid all kinds of turmoil, with head coach Dennis Erickson coaching one last game before exiting Tempe after the school fired him at the conclusion of the regular season. 

Prediction:  Boise State 41, Arizona State 21

Hawaii Bowli

Matchup:  Southern Mississippi (11-2, Conference USA) vs. Nevada (7-5, WAC)

Fresh off of their upset over the previously unbeaten Houston Cougars, Conference USA champions Southern Mississippi will play for the last time under the direction of outgoing head coach Larry Fedora, who was named to the same position at North Carolina earlier this week. 

The Wolfpack will bring one of the nation’s best offenses into this contest, which ranks fifth in the country at 522 yards per game. 

Prediction:  Southern Mississippi 41, Nevada 27

Independence Bowl

Matchup:  Missouri (7-5, Big 12) vs. North Carolina(7-5, ACC)

Where:  Independence Stadium, Shreveport, Louisiana

In what seems to be a contest between two evenly matched teams, both squads will rely heavily on the play of their sensational sophomore quarterbacks. 

James Franklin will guide the Tigers against the stout front four of the Tar Heels, while Bryn Renner and Dwight Jones figure to be a tough combo for the Tigers defense to contain.

Prediction:  North Carolina 31, Missouri 28

Little Caesars Bowl

Matchup:  Purdue (6-6, Big 10) vs. Western Michigan (7-5, MAC)

Where:  Ford Field, Detroit

Purdue makes their return to postseason play for the first time since appearing the 2007 Little Caesars Bowl. 

Western Michigan parlayed a fourth-place finish in the MAC, and standout quarterback Alex Carder will try to guide the Broncos to their elusive first bowl victory in school history.

Belk Bowl

N.C. State’s bowl hopes were in dire straits before they rallied from a huge second-half deficit to beat Maryland. 

Their reward will be a short trip to Charlotte to face Louisville, who won five of its last six games and will look to build on a solid foundation set by head coach Charlie Strong since he took over two years ago. 

Prediction:  Louisville 31, N.C. State 30

Military Bowl

Matchup:  Air Force (7-5, Mountain West) vs. Toledo (8-4, MAC)

Where:  RFK Stadium, Washington, D.C.

When:  Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 4:30 p.m. EDT

Both of these teams started the season slow and finished on hot streaks. 

Air Force began the year at 3-4, but won four of its last five games to make their fifth consecutive bowl trip. 

Toledo started 1-3 before winning seven of its last eight contests, and did so scoring at least 44 points in each of its last five games. 

Prediction:  Toledo 37, Air Force 20

Holiday Bowl

Matchup:  Texas (7-5, Big 12) vs. California (8-4, MAC)

When:  Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 8:00 p.m. EDT

This contest features teams from the Pac-12 and the Big 12 with identical 7-5 records. 

The Longhorns failed to reach a bowl game last season, and getting to eight wins would help send a strong message to fans, recruits and supporters that the program is headed in the right direction. 

The Bears are in a similar position, and getting a signature win over a marquee opponent like Texas would restore a lot of faith in Jeff Tedford’s program. 

Prediction:  Texas  28, California 17

Champs Sports Bowl

Matchup:  Florida State (8-4, ACC) vs. Notre Dame (8-4, Independent)

Where:  Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium, Orlando, Florida

When:  Thursday, Dec. 29 at 5:30 p.m. EDT

Both of these schools fell short of expectations this season, but the winner will likely get another offseason of hype to earn another chance to reemerge on the national stage next season. 

FSU brings a feisty defense that ranks among the nation’s best, and they will likely see two Notre Dame quarterbacks, Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix, that will try to find dynamic receiver Michael Floyd down the field. 

Prediction:  Florida State 27, Notre Dame 21

Alamo Bowl

Matchup:  Baylor (9-3, Big 12) vs. Washington (7-5, Pac-12)

This game gets some added juice with newly crowned Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III leading the Baylor Bears in search of the program’s first bowl victory since 1992. 

Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian will look to continue building his program by trying to win consecutive bowl games for the first time since 1991-92

Prediction:  Baylor 41, Washington 31

Armed Forces Bowl

Matchup:  BYU (9-3, Independent) vs. Tulsa (8-4, Conference USA)

When:  Friday, Dec. 30 at noon EDT

BYU shook off a 1-2 start to finish with wins in eight of its last nine games this season. 

However, the Cougars only notched one of their wins against an opponent with a winning record (Utah State). 

Tulsa, with its high-powered offense, will provide the Cougars secondary with its toughest test so far this season.

Prediction:  Tulsa 38, BYU 24  

Pinstripe Bowl

Matchup:  Rutgers (8-4, Big East) vs. Iowa State (6-6, Big 12)

Where:  Yankees Stadium, Bronx, New York

Rutgers reversed its 4-8 record from a year ago thanks to the top defense in the Big East and a sensational playmaker in receiver Mohamed Sanu. 

Iowa State rallied behind freshman quarterback Jared Barnett to shock Big 12 champion Oklahoma State in late November, and now will look to earn consecutive bowl victories for the first time in school history. 

Prediction:  Rutgers 27, Iowa State 24

Music City Bowl

Matchup:  Wake Forest (6-6, ACC) vs. Mississippi State (6-6, SEC)

Where:  LP Field, Nashville, Tennessee

When:  Friday, Dec. 30 at 6:40 p.m. EDT

The first of two matchups pitting an ACC school against an opponent from the SEC, this game features two 6-6 squads headed in opposite directions. 

After thrashing rival Ole Miss in their season finale, the Bulldogs will be seeking a bowl win in back-to-back seasons, while Wake Forest will try to wipe the taste of a 41-7 loss to Vanderbilt away by taking down the Bulldogs. 

Prediction:  Mississippi State 38, Wake Forest 17

Insight Bowl

Matchup:  Oklahoma (9-3, Big 12) vs. Iowa (7-5, Big 10)

Where:  Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, Arizona

Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops will try to erase memories of a mostly forgettable season by defeating his alma mater.

Iowa has had an up and down year for the most part, but delivering a win over the Sooners would definitely leave them feeling better about the future of their program.

Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas

Matchup:  Texas A&M (6-6, Big 12) vs. Northwestern (6-6, Big 10)

Where:  Reliant Stadium, Houston

This game should be a duel between a pair of strong-armed senior quarterbacks in the Aggies’ Ryan Tannehill and the Wildcats’ Dan Persa. 

The Aggies will have a decided crowd advantage, but also more distractions with playing under an interim coach in Tim DeRuyter.

Sun Bowl

Matchup:  Georgia Tech (8-4, ACC) vs. Utah (7-5, Pac-12)

Utah had a streak of nine straight bowl victories snapped in last season’s loss to Boise State in the Maaco Bowl, and had to win four of its last six games this season to make it into the postseason. 

The Yellow Jackets ascended into the top 10 after a 6-0 start, but floundered down the stretch losing four of their last six games. 

Prediction:  Utah 31, Georgia Tech 24

Liberty Bowl

Matchup:  Vanderbilt (6-6, SEC) vs. Cincinnati (9-3, Big East)

Where:  Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, Memphis, Tennessee

When:  Saturday, Dec. 31 at 3:30 p.m. EDT

Under first-year head coach James Franklin, Vanderbilt will make only its fifth bowl appearance in school history and its first since 2008. 

Cincinnati, co-champions of the Big East, seems to have righted the ship under Butch Jones after failing to gain eligibility last season.

Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl

Both schools come into this game with interim coaching staffs after firing their respective head coaches due to subpar seasons in 2011. 

With both teams having interim coaching staffs, this game will likely come down to which team handles the distractions better.

Chick-fil-A Bowl

A sea of blue and orange will fill up the Georgia Dome when the Cavaliers and Tigers tangle on New Years Eve. 

Both teams will look to bounce back from lopsided losses at the hands of their most hated rivals. 

With its campus less than two hours away from Atlanta, look for Auburn to have a decided advantage in the crowd.

This matchup should provide a classic tug of war between the vaunted Cougars offense and the stout Nittany Lions defense. 

On offense, expect Penn State to stick with their bruising ground game, led by star running Silas Redd, and try to slow down the pace while keeping Houston’s high-powered offense on the sidelines.

Outback Bowl

This is the first of three games pitting a Big Ten school against an opponent from the SEC. 

This matchup features the runners-up in each league squaring off against one another. 

The key to the game may end up being which offense is able to move the ball given, as both teams have defenses that rank among the nation’s best.

Capital One Bowl

This matchup sets up as potentially one of the best non-BCS bowls, with both teams possessing dual-threat quarterbacks and stout defenses. 

Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier will attempt to win just his second bowl game since arriving in Columbia in 2005. 

Prediction:  South Carolina 24, Nebraska 13

Gator Bowl

Despite featuring a game between to 6-6 underachieving teams, this matchup has plenty of buzz with pitting Urban Meyer’s former school against his new school.

The Gators will be without offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, who left to take the head coaching job at Kansas last week.

Rose Bowl

The champions of the Big Ten and Pac-12 square off in a battle of high-powered offenses featuring two of the nation’s finest running backs. 

Oregon’s fast pace will try to wear out the physical, bruising Wisconsin style of play. In the process, they'll win their first BCS game in what will be the school’s third straight season making it to one.

Fiesta Bowl

Although they were snubbed for the BCS National Championship game, the Cowboys will make their first appearance in a BCS bowl in school history. 

Andrew Luck will lead the Cardinal into its second consecutive BCS bowl appearance after guiding them into the Orange Bowl last season.

Sugar Bowl

Perhaps the most controversial choice of the BCS at-large selections, the Hokies enter this contest with something to prove. 

The Wolverines have ascended back into the national spotlight thanks to the efforts of first-year head coach Brady Hoke and star quarterback Denard Robinson.

Orange Bowl

Matchup:  Clemson (10-3, ACC) vs. West Virginia (9-3, Big East)

Big East champions West Virginia will make their third appearance in a BCS bowl game in the last seven years.

Clemson will make its first trip to a BCS bowl after winning the ACC for the first time since 1991. 

Dual-threat quarterbacks Tajh Boyd of Clemson and Geno Smith of West Virginia lead a pair of high-octane offenses that will face one another in a game that has the makings of a shootout. 

Prediction:  Clemson 38, West Virginia 28

Cotton Bowl

Where:  Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas

The Wildcats and the Razorbacks will square off in the only bowl game pitting the Big 12 against the SEC. 

Both teams had resumes strong enough to warrant consideration for an at-large BCS bowl berth. 

Wildcats quarterback Collin Klein does most of his damage on the ground, while Razorbacks gunslinger Tyler Wilson spreads the ball around to one of the finest pass catching units in the country.

Prediction:  Arkansas 28, Kansas State 24

BBVA Compass Bowl

The champions of the MAC and the Sun Belt will tangle on the Alabama gulf coast on the second weekend in January. 

Arkansas State will be without head coach Hugh Freeze, who left to take the opening at Ole Miss, but will look to earn its 10th straight win after a 1-2 start.

Northern Illinois has run off eight straight wins after beginning the season 2-3.

BCS National Championship Game

In what was billed as the “Game of the Century” when the two teams met on November 5 in Tuscaloosa, top-ranked LSU will tangle No. 2 Alabama again after registering a 9-6 overtime win over the tide.
