Heisman Trophy 2011: Why Honey Badger Was the Best Dressed

Ian BergDec 11, 2011

The Heisman Trophy has been awarded, the conversation is over. Robert Griffin III is the newest member to the Heisman Trophy brotherhood. Thanks to the hard work of stiffarmtrophy.com, most expected Griffin III to win by this past Tuesday.

The one winner that no one could predict, however, was the best dressed finalist of the evening. Every year there are two discussions that lead the Heisman ceremony conversation. Who will win, and who is the best dressed.

This year, Tyrann Mathieu took home the best dressed award. Mathieu stood out from the others in many ways on the field, being one of the few defensive players that have ended up in New York City for the presentation ceremony. Despite his many talents, Mathieu was even more impressive with his eye-popping platinum suit combo.

The Suit

Tyrann Mathieu probably did not expect to win the Heisman this past Saturday. He was only the 22nd defensive player to ever make it into the top five for the ceremony. What he did expect to do was win the best dressed award.

Mathieu showed up to the ceremony in a platinum suit. The photographers in the room had to turn off their flashes because the shine on the suit was absolutely insane. Mathieu may not have taken home the Heisman, but the Tigers defensive back stole the eyes of the audience for the majority of the show.

For the ESPN College Football Awards Show Mathieu was well dressed, but nothing compared to the Heisman getup. Millions of golf claps were sounding off around the globe at the sight of Mr. Mathieu’s suit choice.

Tie To Match

Not only did Mathieu stun the crowd with his suit choice, but even the neck tie managed to have its own shine and mixture of LSU purple. For all the wow that came with the suit, the tie calmed down the ensemble while remaining flashy in its own right.

Where he was able to find this suit is beyond me, but at the end of the day I have to say I liked it. Mathieu was by far the best dressed finalist, if for no other reason than it was so different. The rest of the field found comfort in tradition, the Honey Badger stepped out of the box and hit a home run.

Funny Twitter Jabs

There was a mixture of responses to the platinum suit that Mathieu was sporting. A number of praises were scattered around the Twitter-sphere, but there were also a ton of negative responses. Here are a few of the better jabs at the wardrobe choice.

“Somebody tell Tyrann Mathieu to turn his suit down, it’s hurting my eyes. #Heisman”

“LOL.. Tyrann Mathieu looking like a mix between Diddy/Sisqo/ & Chris Tucker from “The 5th Element” right now with that suit.”

“Tyrann Mathieu may not win the Heisman, but he can return to Earth from the moon without catching fire.”

All pretty funny when you think about them. At the end of the day, I thought it was awesome that the other finalists could adjust their ties in the sheen of the suit. It simply makes sense to be that big of a team player. #TeamMathieu

Where Did the Flash Come From?

On Thursday night, Mathieu took home some hardware in the Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards show. He also came well dressed in a traditional suit for the awards ceremony. He was anything but flashy—outside of his hair.

There is no telling what changed for the Heisman show except the expectation was there that he had to make a splash. He knew that he wasn’t going to win the Heisman Trophy, why not win the style award? He definitely took the wardrobe win.

Superman Socks Come Close To Stealing the Focus

Robert Griffin III had a style statement of his own sporting some Superman socks for the ceremony underneath his otherwise traditional suit set. The flash that comes with the “S” and cape are tough to beat, but the overall platinum ensemble of Mathieu wins out.

However, there has to be a lot of props given to the latest Heisman winner. What an awesome pair of socks.
