Khan vs. Peterson: Rematch Will Spawn Greatest Trilogy in Boxing History
In what could be called the biggest robbery of 2011, Amir Khan lost his WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles to Lamont Peterson in an absolutely wonderful fight.
The magnitude of how good the actual fight was is irrelevant now that the controversial decision is stealing all of the headlines. This has all the makings for an extended rivalry.
When asked about his willingness to fight Khan again in an immediate rematch, Peterson made sure that Khan and the boxing world knew he was ready for a fight any time.
"I was the big underdog - a lot of people thought Khan was going to win. Early on they were probably saying it again, but I'm not going to lay down for anyone, I'll fight the whole way through. I would definitely give him a rematch - he gave me a chance to fight for a world title, why not? It was a good fight, I'm pretty sure everybody enjoyed it and I don't mind doing it again
"
This could be the beginning of trash talk we get from both of these men and maybe some actual animosity over the decision in this fight. It’s been too long since the boxing world has gotten a stellar rivalry, especially one that actually results in fights.
With the loss weighing heavily on Khan, he needs to come out in the second fight of this war and beat Peterson. That fight would then lead to the deciding battle for ultimate supremacy in this matchup.
Boxing fans want this to go to three fights because that is the boxing equivalent of the ninth inning in baseball. In a third fight where both men have each won a fight leading into the battle, the aura of being the undisputed better fighter is something that would weigh heavily on both fighters' pride.
As good as the first fight on Saturday was, this war has the potential to be the best in boxing history.
