Khan vs. Peterson: Home Advantage Won't Change Inevitable Loss for Peterson

Ryan RudnanskyDec 10, 2011

Much has been made about Amir Khan conceding home advantage to Lamont Peterson leading up to their fight on Saturday night in Washington D.C.

Khan, after all, shouldn't have to concede to anybody. He's going for his sixth title defense in the light welterweight division, and is currently ranked as the No.1 boxer in the division.

The 25-year-old has gone 26-1 in his career and he's just getting started. His fifth-round knockout of Zab Judah in July was stunning.

But, nonetheless, Khan finds himself going up against Peterson's home crowd on Saturday night, and it's not like Peterson is a slouch.

Peterson, at 27 years old, has gone 29-1-1 in his career, his only loss being a hard-fought 12-round decision to Timothy Bradley, who is ranked No. 2 in the light welterweight division, right behind Khan.

Peterson has never been knocked out, but his punching power, especially from close range, has the potential of seating Khan. He's certainly no easy opponent.

But, in the end, Peterson's close-range power, nor his home advantage, will mean anything. Khan is simply too good.

Sure, if Peterson gets close enough and if Khan exposes himself, then there's a chance Peterson could score a knockout.

But Khan is so good because of his footwork and uncanny ability to keep his distance from foes' best punches. There's a reason why he's the No. 1 fighter in the light welterweight division.

Speaking of Peterson's home advantage, Khan said, via The Los Angeles Times:

"

"The home crowd is a lot of pressure. He might crack. I think he'll fight with his heart and all his dreams will go out the window.

"I made the same mistake before."

"

Khan, of course, suffered his only defeat to Breidis Prescott in Manchester, England, near his hometown of Bolton.

In that sense, there is a chance the home advantage actually works against Peterson because he'll be too aggressive and not cautious enough.

But I don't think that will be the case.

I simply think that none of it will matter. Khan is the better boxer, and he's only getting better.

Home advantage or not, Khan is unstoppable these days.
