UFC 140 Results: Jake Hecht Has Long Way to Go Despite Knockout Win

Michael DixonDec 10, 2011

On paper, a second round knockout win looks pretty good. While it's true that—in the end—getting the win is all that matters, mistakes are often made in wins that will lead to future losses.

That was the case with Jake Hecht on Saturday. Despite scoring a knockout victory over Rich Attonito, Hecht was clearly the inferior fighter for nearly the entire fight.

After coming out with a few nice kicks, Hecht was on his back for the remainder of the first round. The second round was heading down an identical path before Hecht's elbow put Attonito out.

This was Hecht's first fight in the UFC. Now that he has a fight under his belt that future opponents can watch, they'll know what traps to stay away from.

Getting a shot in like Hecht did after being dominated for a round and a half indicates a certain amount of luck was at play. It also shows that he was fighting an opponent that didn't know him very well.

In the end, there's nothing wrong with a knockout win. The problem is that the first part of the fight was never close.

Hecht's fighting strategy was purely offensive. Attonito had little problem getting on top of Hecht and wearing him down.

Had the fight gone to decision, Hecht would clearly have lost. He was also running out of gas as he was absorbing all of Attonito's body weight the whole time.

Hecht has to find a way to fight a more defensive game. Being opportunistic is fine, but you can't plan on that when you're being dominated for such a long time.

If Hecht can't find a way to do that, wins like this will be few and far between.
