Heisman Trophy: Top 5 Old-School Winners, Pre-1970

Sean MerrimanDec 10, 2011

On Thursday night, the college football world got to see Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III accept the Davey O'Brien award, which is given to the nation's top college quarterback. They also got to see Alabama running back Trent Richardson capture the Doak Walker award for college football's best running back.

But how good were O'Brien and Walker back in their playing days?

We know about the recent Heisman Trophy winners, but what about those who took home the award way back in the day?

Let's kick it old school and take a look at the top-five Heisman Trophy winners before 1970.

Bleacher Report style!

5. Davey O'Brien

1 of 5

Davey O'Brien was so good in college football that he had an award named after him, which goes to the most outstanding quarterback every college football season.

O'Brien was only 5'7" and weighed less than 160 pounds, but he was dominant out on the football field in the late 1930s.

During O'Brien's 1938 Heisman season he completed 110 passes for 1,733 yards and 19 touchdowns. He still holds the record for most rushing and passing plays in one season.

4. John Lujack

2 of 5

When it comes to Notre Dame greats, Johnny Lujack has to top the list.

Lujack was the only quarterback in college football history to lead his school to three national championships.

In addition to passing for near 3,000 yards in his time at Notre Dame, Lujack was also a standout defensive back, which also led to him winning the 1947 Heisman Trophy.

Lujack was introduced into the College Hall of Fame in 1960, making him the youngest player ever to be introduced at the age of 35.

3. Glenn Davis

3 of 5

Glenn Davis was one of the most outstanding running backs in college football history.

Still to this day, he holds the  record for most yards gained per play in one season with an 11.7 YPC average. He combined for more than 4,000 yards in his time at Army and scored an eye-popping 59 touchdowns in his college football career.

Perhaps the most impressive stat with Davis is that he averaged almost one touchdown every nine plays from scrimmage.

It's tough to top those awesome numbers.

2. Roger Staubach

4 of 5

We just had a winner from Army, so wouldn't it only be fitting to list a winner here from Navy?

No one in the 1960's played the quarterback position quite like Roger Staubach did.

During his junior season in 1963, 963, Staubach completed more than 115 passes, nine of which went for touchdowns.

Staubach became just the fourth player in college football history to win the award as a junior. He went on to have a spectacular NFL career and is a member of the NFL and College Football Hall of Fame. He was elected in 1981.

1. Doak Walker

5 of 5

Doak Walker is considered by many to be the greatest running back to ever play in college football.

He is certainly the best pre-1960, which is why college football's top running back is honored with an award in his name year-in and year-out.

Walker won the Heisman Trophy award during his junior season at SMU. During his time there, the outstanding back gained over 3,500 yards running and passing. During his college career, Walker played in 35 college games and scored 303 points on 40 touchdowns.

He was the best of the best back in the day.

Doak Walker is certainly "kickin' it old school."
