Heisman Trophy Predictions: Here's How the 5 Finalists Will Finish
With the awarding of the 77th annual Heisman Trophy tonight, the eyes of all fans, especially those with their teams involved, will be on New York City to see which playmaker will take home the prestigious trophy.
As Andrew Luck, Tyrann Mathieu, Montee Ball, Trent Richardson and Robert Griffin III await their fate, here are Bleacher Report’s predictions on how the Heisman Trophy will play out tonight on ESPN.
No. 5: LSU DB Tyrann Mathieu
1 of 5Season: Two Interceptions, Four Fumble Returns, Two Punt Returns Touchdowns, 53 Tackles, Sack
Even with a season that rivaled the one by the only defensive player to win the Heisman, Charles Woodson, Tyrann Mathieu will end up fifth in the voting and will not become the second LSU Tiger to win the biggest award in college football.
No. 4: Wisconsin RB Montee Ball
2 of 5Season: 275 Carries, 20 Receptions, 1,816 Yards Total Offense, 38 Total Touchdowns
In the tradition of great running backs coming through Madison, Montee Ball has definitely kept the tradition alive. The Wisconsin running back finished the regular season fourth in the nation in rushing, averaging more than 135 yards per game in 2011.
No. 3: Stanford QB Andrew Luck
3 of 5Season: 261-373 Pass Attempts, 43 Carries, 3,323 Yards Total Offense, 37 Touchdowns, Nine Interceptions
While the Cardinal quarterback might be tailor-made to be a high-profile NFL quarterback when he enters the draft, Andrew Luck won’t be able to take home the biggest award in the sport this season. While it's clear that Luck is really good, there are two players in college football that top the Stanford signal caller.
No. 2: Baylor QB Robert Griffin III
4 of 5Season: 267-369 Pass Attempts, 161 Carries, 4,642 Yards Total Offense, 45 Touchdowns, Six Interceptions
With high-profile wins in 2011 over TCU, Oklahoma and Texas, Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III led the program to its best season in since back-to-back nine win seasons in 1986 and 1987. RGIII carried the team, accumulating almost 4,000 yards passing along with nearly 650 yards rushing.
No. 1: Alabama RB Trent Richardson
5 of 5Season: 263 Carries, 27 Receptions, 1,583 Yards Total Offense, 23 Touchdowns
After former Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram moved onto the New Orleans Saints of the NFL, Trent Richardson took over as the feature back for the Crimson Tide and tore through opposing defenses with his bruising running style. Richardson will make it the second Heisman Trophy for Alabama in three years.
