UFC 140 Predictions: Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida
Both Jon Jones and Lyoto Machida find themselves in one of the most anticipated bouts of the year at UFC 140.
Both fighters present interesting styles to one another and are strategic, yet unconventional, in their approach during the fight.
Jones has torn through the light heavyweight division unlike any other fighter at 205 pounds. Standing at 6'4" and owning an 84.5" reach, the decorated Greco-Roman wrestler possesses the raw skills and talent in a rare form that makes him a threat to his competition. At only 24 years old, Jones' skills are still progressing at an alarming rate, and he has effortlessly defeated former champions Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
Despite the lone blemish on his record to Matt Hamill, a bout he was dominating, Jones has looked virtually unbeatable, and he will look to extend his current title reign into the new year.
Perhaps no other opponent presents a challenge to the champion stylistically-speaking quite like Machida. The former champion has suddenly reignited the aura that once surrounded him on his quest to become champion after knocking out Randy Couture at UFC 129. The elusive karate practitioner is one of the most well-rounded competitors in the 205-pound division, making his style difficult to prepare for and adjust to.
Appearing motivated and determined to regain the light heavyweight title, Machida is prepared to walk into the Octagon Saturday and remind the world why he is and remains one of the most experienced and dangerous fighters in the sport today.
Although most fans have drawn their attention to Jones' success, some forget that Machida was a former champion and is still a highly formidable competitor.
Unlike the one-sided dominance that most fans would expect out of the champion, this bout has the likelihood of being very strategic and balanced.
Jones' size and reach should provide as a challenge to the Brazilian and keep him at a distance for a short while. However, Machida utilizes footwork and angles better than anyone in the light heavyweight division, allowing him to get inside the pocket and land damage before his opponents have time to react and defend. Machida also possesses some of the most underrated grappling in the division, and his ability to gain offense inside the clinch could be dangerous for Jones if he is unable to complete the takedown.
Jones' athleticism and size could ultimately prove to be too much for "The Dragon," but Machida's timing and ability to establish his range could allow him to get inside and land the one blow to dramatically change the fight and end Jones' reign.
Machida's unorthodox style, superior footwork and striking might not be able to damage the champion completely, but they will test his ability and exploit some flaws in his overall game, setting some doubt in Jones' mind that he isn't invincible.
Ultimately, Jones will survive and get the victory, but it won't be easy.
Prediction: Jon Jones via split decision.
