Kevin Sumlin Texas A&M: Why Houston Coach Is Ideal Candidate for Aggies

Donald WoodDec 10, 2011

While it was Georgia Bulldogs' coach Mark Richt that Texas A&M was looking for, they’ll get the better coach overall when they convince Kevin Sumlin to leave the Houston Cougars and join the Aggies.

After former head coach Mike Sherman was fired for his mediocre performance leading the program, the hunt began for the next person that could lead the Aggies in their journey to the SEC.

It looks like after a few more finishing touches, Kevin Sumlin will become the new head coach of Texas A&M. There had been rumors for weeks about who was drawing interest from the University, but Sumlin was the clear choice.

"

Texas A&M was close Saturday morning to finalizing a contract with Houston's Kevin Sumlin, who the Aggies have chosen as their new coach, a school source has told ESPN's Joe Schad.

"

This is a smart move for an Aggies team jumping to the toughest conference in the country, the SEC. Sumlin will look to make his mark as a head coach at a big university by getting his team in a position to succeed right away.

Mark Richt is a solid coach, but a team like Texas A&M that is making a huge move to a new conference needs a new face that will be willing to lay it all on the line. This is Sumlin’s ideal job.

Sumlin is Texas A&M’s ideal choice, whether they know it yet or not.

The current Houston Cougars coach lead the team to a 35-17 record over his four years with the program, but his history goes back much farther.

Not only was Sumlin part of the offensive attacks that Oklahoma had under Bob Stoops as co-offensive coordinator, the coach was offensive coordinator under R.C. Slocum at Texas A&M.

It’s the homecoming for a coach that the university should have never let go.

With Sumlin coming into the Aggies program with little expectations because of the jump in conference and change in coaching staff, success won’t be easy.

If Texas A&M allows Sumlin the time necessary to recruit the kids that would fit his system, the team could be a real threat to do big things over the next five years.

Some Aggies fans will feel like the university settled with the possible hiring of Sumlin, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Those same people will have to hold their tongue when Sumlin has the same kind of success at Texas A&M he had at Houston.
