News Roundup: Meet Tom Herman
David ThurmanDec 9, 2011
Drew Thurman (1:05 pm)
Well, Urban Meyer's staff is starting to take shape. The big news last night was that Iowa State's offensive coordinator, Tom Herman, would be the new quarterback coach at Ohio State. That news got confirmed this morning, even though it appears it wasn't supposed to be. There are also reports that he may be the offensive coordinator as well, so I guess we will see when the university officially announces the news.
Herman's name is one that probably hasn't been on your radar. Well, it's time for you to get caught up to speed and realize that Urban has hired one of the best young coaches in the business. Here is a little background on him via CBS Sports:
As for Meyer's new quarterbacks coach, Herman is relatively young (36 years old); he graduated cum laude from California Lutheran in 1997 and has been an assistant coach ever since. He has been Iowa State's offensive coordinator for three years, as he was brought in with Paul Rhoads before the 2009 season. Under Herman, the Iowa State offense has scored 20.5, 23.7, and 23.6 points per game in those three years. Previously, Herman was the offensive coordinator at Rice for two years, and he spent time as an assistant at two other schools in Texas for the six season prior to that. Herman also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Texas after graduating from college.
I would also encourage you to check out this piece on Herman from Bruce Feldman or this one from the Iowa State Daily. Also, you will really like this guy after watching him here and here. Seriously, watch those videos, then check out the rest of the news roundup...

Coaching Carousel
The Buckeyes aren't the only team making coaching news. Kansas made headlines by hiring Charlie Weis, and jokes are still being cracked at their expense. Personally, I think it is cool they will be able to reuse their "our coach can eat your coach" t-shirts. The bigger news for us in the B1G is that Illinois is hiring Tim Beckman. The soon to be former Toledo head coach has ties to both Ohio State and Urban Meyer (with Bowling Green) as an assistant coach. He also was on the short list for many fans to replace Fickell as the head coach at the end of this year, especially after his showing in the Horseshoe this fall.
After Zook, this definitely appears to be an upgrade for the Illini and the conference as a whole. While I'm still not sold on Beckman's defensive focus as a head coach, part of the reason I didn't see him in Columbus, I think he was the best guy they could get. Well besides Kevin Sumlin.
More NCAA-Ohio State Headlines
New broke today that Ohio State was granted a waiver from the NCAA allowing Urban Meyer to recruit during the bowl season. Why is this so important? Well, here is a little more background:
The waiver specifies that no more than 10 coaches -- and no more than seven at any one time -- may be involved in recruiting. Ohio State asked for the waiver because otherwise it would have exceeded the maximum number of allowed coaches under NCAA rules.
There have been some rumblings at other schools that the waiver gives Ohio State a competitive advantage because their coaching staffs must deal with bowl preparations and recruiting at the same time -- with no additional people.
Rumblings at other schools? Of course there is. It would be interesting to see what coaches and/or schools are the ones complaining about things. On a mores serious note, this waiver may be an indication of things to come with the NCAA. If they are truly angry with Ohio State and are going to bring down the hammer, would they hand out this waiver? Probably not. Then again, it really isn't like they are giving the Buckeyes an exception that is not within NCAA and Big Ten rules.
Even More NCAA-Ohio State Headlines
According to Doug Lesmerises the Buckeyes should find out their fate in the next 10-14 days. In fact, the Committee of Intractions is meeting today and tomorrow, without OSU officials in attendance, to discuss Ohio State's case. Lesmerises is also reporting that the university and the NCAA agree on the facts of the case, which might be an indication that there will at least not be a bowl ban. Gene Smith has been adamant that the case does not warrant one, and the university agreeing would indicate that it will not be handed down. Many still feel that something more will be handed down, possibly more scholarships being docked or a longer probation period. Regardless, avoiding the bowl ban is by far the biggest deal.
