2011 Bowl Games: The 10 Funniest Bowl Sponsorships

Danny FlynnDec 10, 2011

Bowl season is always a great time for college football fans to rejoice, as they're treated to 35 games stretched out over the holiday season,  and it's also a time when we can all soak in the commercialism of college football.

Naming rights for college bowl games have become great new sources of revenue for the sport.

Since the NCAA has sold its soul in order to make a profit, it's given us some truly terrible, yet pretty entertaining bowl game names.

Here’s a look at the 10 funniest sponsorships of the 2011 bowl season.

The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

1 of 10

Any time a bowl game can turn a football into a potato for its logo, it's got my full support, but that doesn't change the fact that the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl is still a hilariously awful name for a bowl game.

One day, the grandchildren of Ohio and Utah State players will be regaled with tales of how fun it was to play in the Potato Bowl, and I'm sure they'll all have puzzled looks on their faces.

The GoDaddy.com Bowl

2 of 10

The only thing that would make the GoDaddy.com Bowl between Arkansas State and Northern Illinois watchable is if Danica Patrick refereed the game in a bikini.

It's a travesty that this will be the second-to-last bowl of the season.

The Little Caesars Pizza Bowl

3 of 10

When I was at college in West Virginia, I basically lived off of Little Caesars' five-dollar pizzas, so the chain will always have a special place in my heart; however, I don't know if it's all that appropriate to have a bowl called the Pizza Bowl.

It does sound delicious, though.

The Belk Bowl

4 of 10

I got the opportunity to go down to Charlotte for the Belk Bowl back in 2008 when West Virginia played North Carolina, back when it was called the Meineke Car Care Bowl, and I have to say, it was a pretty fun trip.

If you don't happen to be from the South, and you're wondering what the heck a Belk is, it's a department store.

Honestly, though, I'd rather have it be called the Balki Bowl, sponsored by Bronson Pinchot.

The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl

5 of 10

And the award for the longest bowl game name goes to...The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

That's certainly a mouthful, isn't it?

The Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl

6 of 10

And the award for the second longest bowl name goes to...The Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl.

The previous name, the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl, was, of course, so much better.

I don't know why bowl officials had to go screwing with a good thing.

The Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl

7 of 10

Being from the northeast, I'll admit, I had no idea what Beef 'O' Brady's was.

Originally, I thought it was some type of dog food, but apparently, it's a restaurant chain.

Either way, the name doesn't belong attached to a bowl game.

The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl

8 of 10

While the name sounds pretty funny for a bowl game, it actually represents a pretty great cause, as Kraft works with Feeding America to help provide millions of meals for people in need.

You have to appreciate the charity work that Kraft does, but you certainly don't have to appreciate this year's bowl matchup, which will pit a 6-6 Illinois team against a 6-7 UCLA squad. Yuck!

Both schools will go to San Francisco fresh off of firing their head coaches.

The Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl

9 of 10

The Gator Bowl has changed sponsors five times since its inception back in 1986, but Taxslayer.com is  the dumbest name it's had so far (Yes, even dumber than Konica Minolta).

This year's game will pit two power programs, Ohio State and Florida, against each other, but both teams had very down years this season, so it doesn't look like this game will be all that great.

The Chick-fil-A Bowl

10 of 10

Keeping with the theme of bowl names that will make you hungry, the Chick-fil-A Bowl usually features a pretty good matchup of SEC and ACC teams, but this year's Auburn-Virginia tilt probably won't draw a ton of national interest.

Still, these teams have a great outlook for 2012, and the game should at least be worth checking out in order to get a good feel for what both will have to offer next year.
