Robert Griffin III: 5 Reasons He Won't Win Heisman, 5 Reasons He Will

Dan VastaDec 8, 2011

The 78th Heisman Trophy winner will be announced this Saturday right around 8:52 PM Eastern Standard Time.

There are five spectacular finalists, and one could argue that any of the five invitees would have an argument not only this season, but more importantly in any other season.

The statistics speak volumes for a few teams, and we should all take a look at all five contestants. Trent Richardson, Andrew Luck, Montee Ball, Tyrann Mathieu and Robert Griffin III have been amazing to watch this season.

However, Robert Griffin III gets my vote, and I will give you five reasons why he may not get to hoist the trophy and five reasons why he better be prepared to give that infamous speech with millions around closely listening.

Being Baylor Still Stays in Voters' Minds

1 of 10

No player from Baylor has ever won the Heisman, and quite frankly the program has been lousy regardless of the era.

Sure, the Bears had a few solid teams in the early 1900s and in 1980 (10-2), but overall they are one of the least winning and least popular teams in the country among BCS teams.

Perception Is Big 12 Has Soft Defenses and Zero Respect

2 of 10

The computers may like the Big 12, but most fans are not the biggest fans of the Big 12 Conference because its members have struggled to win championships and or play any defense.

The SEC dominates defensively, and most of their fans would never admit that the Big 12 could ever knock off the best conference in America.

If you look at RGIII’s opponents, no team other than Texas had a top-40 defense, while Trent Richardson goes up against a Top 25 team nearly every other weekend.

Supporting Cast

3 of 10

Some argue that Trent Richardson has zero help around him with a new quarterback, and most will argue that Andrew Luck plays on an average team to begin with.

Tyrann Mathieu does play on the best defense on the planet (save Bama), and he has already tied/set a record in just his sophomore season. We could argue that he has accomplished more in one season than any other defensive back ever has before. Plus, he plays on the best team on the planet.

Montee Ball may have a great offensive line blocking for him, but he has found the end zone more than any back in the game except for the legend known as Barry Sanders.

Kendall Wright is among the five or 10 best wideouts in America, and many (not me) believe he has a lot to do with Griffin completing all of these passes.

Team Isn’t Good Enough

4 of 10

I admit the Baylor Bears were worthy of a BCS bowl because of how they were playing down the stretch, but nobody really thinks the Bears are so-called “very good-great.”

The reason is that the Bears defense ranks 114th in the country in terms of total defense. Without a defense, most wonder if you are even worthy of sniffing the Top 10 in the polls, let alone having a Heisman winner.

Career Award

5 of 10

It isn’t so much that the Heisman Trophy is given to a player that achieved greatness in his career, but with Andrew Luck and Trent Richardson you may have to ponder what the result will be.

Is a Baylor Bear honestly going to win the Heisman? The most outstanding player in the country should win the Heisman, and some honestly think Mr. Luck or Richardson is just that.

History

6 of 10

Nine of the last 11 Heisman winners have been a quarterback, and Griffin only has Andrew Luck to go up against if you believe that theory for this season.

Luck has played some of his worst football in the spotlight games and/or losses (USC, Oregon), whereas Griffin did not play badly in any of the Bears' three losses.

Did Not Struggle in Losses

7 of 10

Baylor only had three losses: Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M. We couldn’t put any of the blame on Griffin because he threw for nine TDs and passed for 1,201 yards with just three interceptions. RGIII also has upset wins over TCU and Oklahoma.

Plus, the Bears were known as the laughingstock of the Big 12, and all of a sudden they are among the top contenders in the entire country.

Stats

8 of 10

People always talk about how important the stats are, but RGIII has plenty of them. Averaging 386 yards of total offense and totaling 45 touchdowns with just six interceptions is beyond nasty.

Every single time Griffin spins a pass deep to Kendall Wright, he usually does it when his team needs him the most. It is not like the Bears are playing a bunch of bums in the Big 12. The Bears defensively have struggled.

Cool in the Clutch

9 of 10

RGIII is easily at his best when it matters the most. When the pressure is on, he has his swag going on.

When Baylor is tied or trailing by 14 points or less, the future Heisman winner has thrown 20 touchdowns compared to just one pick!

Heisman Moments

10 of 10

They always say the Heisman is won by a few electrifying moments, and RGIII had more than a few of those great moments.

In the opener against TCU he went bonkers, throwing for 359 yards and five TDs.

Then in the Bears' upset over the Sooners, he ended up with another virtuoso performance, throwing for four TDs and 479 yards as he tossed the game-winning touchdown under a minute to go.

Lastly, to top things off against his lone top-40 defense (Texas), he ended up throwing for 320 yards with four total touchdowns (two rushing).

He made his statements and carried his team to victory in every single one of those games. He proved he is the most outstanding player in the country, and he deserves to hoist the 8.5-pound Heisman Trophy on Saturday night!
