NFL Week 14 Picks: Predicting QBs Who Will Have Their Teams Flying High

John RozumDec 8, 2011

With the quarterback position being so important, it's no surprise the passing game has taken over the football world at virtually every level.

And since the game has significantly changed to rely more heavily on a prolific passer, more and more quarterbacks are getting better and dicing up defenses. In the NFL, the obvious answers each week are guys like Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees.

Nevertheless, here are four other QBs who will shred in Week 14.

Philip Rivers, Chargers (vs Bills)

1 of 4

Despite Philip Rivers' shortcomings this season, the Chargers still rank No. 6 in passing offense. In addition, the Buffalo Bills found out real quick that you can't live on four turnovers each week.

Currently the Bills rank No. 19 against the pass and No. 24 against the rush. To that end, however, Rivers got back on track last week on the road in Jacksonville against a pretty solid Jaguars defense.

This week, Rivers will slice the Buffalo defense for 300-plus yards and three TDs en route to a second straight victory. It's clear that without a ground game, San Diego's success lies on his right arm, so although it's late, better late than never.

No one on Buffalo can cover Vincent Jackson in single coverage and the Bills are even weaker in zone. Don't expect a lot of deep balls, but do expect a bunch of solid 10-15 yards gains in Southern California.

With no ground game, Buffalo will respect the pass a lot more, so nothing down the field will be open as much as across the middle.

Tony Romo, Cowboys (vs Giants)

2 of 4

The Cowboys may have gotten the Giants at the right possible time. Just one week removed from a loss at Arizona, Dallas is fortunate to play New York, who was exploited by Green Bay.

Even with the Giants dropping seven or eight into coverage, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was able to find guys in the smallest of windows. As for Tony Romo, he's quite fortunate to have a solid rushing attack to complement his passing game.

The Giants rank No. 29 against the pass to Dallas' No. 7 pass offense, but Big Blue also ranks just No. 23 in defending the run. So, we can't anticipate Romo going downfield all game long, because a great rushing attack will make it even easier to move the ball via air.

Wait until the second quarter for Romo to really hit a rhythm, because when he does, New York will have no shot to stop him. Additionally, throwing the ball will be the only option for the Giants to beat Dallas, since they lack a rushing attack.

Therefore, as the game progresses, Romo will need to continue his gun-slinging ways all over the field to an abundance of solid receiving targets. By day's end, he'll be near 400 passing yards and have at least two TDs.

Joe Flacco, Ravens (vs Colts)

3 of 4

It's somewhat of a surprise with Flacco on a list as such, but then again, not so much. We know Baltimore will move the ball on Indianapolis, as the Colts have arguably the NFL's worst defense.

Early, RB Ray Rice will see a lot of carries and Flacco won't have to do much as the screen pass and designed check-downs will be there too. To that end, though, it's simply just setting up rookie WR Torrey Smith to burn Indy's secondary down field.

Smith is the difference-maker for the Ravens because they've never had a young WR of his speed who could stretch the field so well. Not to mention Flacco's strong arm and solid pass protection will give Smith enough time to get past the second-level coverage.

Whether it's a post, streak, deep drag or double move, Torrey Smith will get open. Perhaps the scariest part of Flacco darting the rock to him will be on the comeback routes, as that dimension makes a CB vulnerable to fake-pumps.

And even if Smith is covered, other reliable targets such as TE Ed Dickson and WR Anquan Boldin will be available. Indy simply lacks talent, and Flacco will reign supreme for 300-plus yards and three TDs.

Matthew Stafford, Lions (vs Vikings)

4 of 4

This is the Lions' bread and butter: Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson.

It's one of the best QB-to-WR duos in the game, and Detroit needs them in perfect synchronization to make the postseason.

And against the Vikings this week, who have the No. 26 ranked pass defense, Stafford will flourish. Let's put it this way, if Tim Tebow can throw two TDs and over 200 yards against Minnesota, Stafford will dominate.

Now, Tebow has improved without a doubt. His throwing ability, however, is nothing compared to Stafford. Along with Megatron, Stafford has two good TEs in Brandon Pettigrew and Tony Scheffler, as well as rookie Titus Young and Nate Burleson.

Also, Detroit desperately needs a win since they're just 2-5 after starting 5-0. Plus, with the Vikings lacking a passing game, it's the best approach to beating them. Force Ponder to throw against your decent pass defense and the odds will be even more in The Motor City's favor.

Calvin Johnson is unstoppable and Matthew Stafford will prove he's unstoppable with a 350-plus yard performance, including four TDs.
