Rose Bowl Puts the Spotlight on CFB's Most Creative Fans
The Rose Bowl is a short drive from Hollywood, but the real talent lives in Eugene and Madison.
College football fans often find ways to show their school pride across every conceivable media. From the old-school stadium sign to 140-character Twitter storms, college students are heckling savants.
Putting aside discussions of offensive firepower, spread option attacks and secondary strengths, this year's Rose Bowl puts two incredible fan bases where they should be: in the spotlight. So before the pilgrimage to Pasadena begins in earnest, here's a quick review of the artistic firepower both teams bring to bear.
It's "Return of the Quack" versus "Teach Me How to Bucky" in a clash of creativity.
The students responsible for this at the University of Georgia may want to take some notes.
Return of the Quack
1 of 3Supwitchugirl and the Ducks do not disappoint, and more than 1.6 million views reflect that success.
This ode to all things Autzen is well-produced, catchy and clever. According to the group's Twitter page, Supwitchugirl features "[t]hree University of Oregon alumni who make silly music/videos.We love our Ducks. We still use pagers."
Pagers or not, the group hit gold with their rendition of Mark Morrison's "Return of the Mack."
The video gets extra points for having a Joey Harrington cameo, as well as the Oregon cheerleaders, who are featured prominently. Seriously, what do they put in the water in Eugene?
A simple search also brings up "Teach Me How to Duckie," which pales in comparison to this 2010 instant classic.
Teach Me How to Bucky
2 of 3The popular song, "Teach Me How to Dougie" got a Sconnie remake last year in the form of "Teach Me How to Bucky" by Zooniversity Music.
This YouTube sensation is well-coordinated with multiple University of Wisconsin personnel making appearances, including then-chancellor Biddy Martin. Despite her robotic dance moves, the effort and enthusiasm is appreciated by the Dairy State faithful.
The lyrics succeed in putting down everyone of the Badger's Big Ten brethren, and the videography grabs some of the most iconic scenes from Madison. The unofficial "swag song" is currently edging out their Oregon counterpart to the tune of around 200,000 more views.
With the Rose Bowl talk heating up, the number is bound to rise.
An honorable mention goes to Anthony Lamarr and his "We're Smelling Roses" anthem. But ask any Wisconsin die-hard, and "Teach Me How to Bucky" is the campus favorite.
Who Wins?
3 of 3The Rose Bowl committee knew they hit pay dirt when Wisconsin and Oregon got the nod for the "Granddaddy of Them All."
The fan atmosphere is one of the biggest draws to the game, and this year's crew will add to that tradition.
What's more, this year's game features two dynamic mascots, uniforms that seemingly change by the half and Wisconsin's famed marching band.
Forget the football, this year's Rose Bowl ticket is worth admission for the theatrics alone.
