Jerry Sandusky: Disgraced Penn State Coach Delays the Inevitable by Posting Bail
After being taken from his home in handcuffs on Wednesday and spending the night in jail, former Penn State defensive coordinator and accused child molester Jerry Sandusky was released on $250,000 bail on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.
Sandusky was jailed as two more accusers came forward in addition to the eight named in the original charges against the disgraced coach. According to MyFOXPhilly.com, Sandusky's wife Dottie came up with the bail through $200,000 in real estate and a $50,000 certified check.
Also, Sandusky will reportedly have to be electronically monitored upon his release, as ordered by the judge who handled his arraignment on Wednesday. While Sandusky would obviously rather be in his own home than jail, I believe posting bail is simply further delaying the inevitable at this point.
Sandusky will face an additional arraignment on Tuesday for the original charges he faced, meaning more jail time prior to his trial is a possibility. No matter how damning the evidence may look currently due to the sheer volume of alleged victims, it would be irresponsible to assume guilt.
Even so, it is becoming very obvious that the outlook is grim for Sandusky. As more and more possible victims step forward, Sandusky's reputation gets worse, if that was even possible in the first place.
The key when it comes to convicting Sandusky could very well be the testimony of Penn State assistant Mike McQueary, who allegedly witnessed Sandusky sexually assaulting a young boy in a Penn State locker-room shower in 2002.
McQueary's credibility has been called into question, as his story has deviated a bit from his grand jury testimony, but he appears to be the only potential witness at this point. Regardless of how credible he may be, though, the jury may be swayed simply by the amount of accusers coming forward.
Ultimately, it isn't much of a surprise that Sandusky's wife bailed him out, but that money may go to waste in the end. Sandusky would be best advised to savor his freedom now, because there is certainly no guarantee that there is much more on the horizon.
