Big East Expansion: Geography Makes Expansion Too Weird to Work
I know the conference realignment is about money, but now regions are completely irrelevant.
Expecting UConn to form a rivalry with the likes of Houston is far-fetched, but that is apparently what Big East officials are attempting to create.
The Big East additions are set, they will include Boise St. and San Diego State as football only schools and Houston, Southern Methodist and Central Florida for all sports.
While all of these schools have quality, up-and-coming programs in basketball and/or football, it is asking a lot of fans to buy into their inclusion to the Big East.
Most rivalries are based on geography and to completely disregard that just doesn't seem natural when compiling a conference.
It seems to me that a name change would be in order, but then again, that could threaten the bottom line. We all know that it's all about money.
The hypocrisy of collegiate athletics is bold and audacious. A group of institutions that preach staying for four years and resisting the monetary pull of professional sports on its student athletes, will do anything for a buck.
Head coaches jump ship, without regard for the kids or families they've visited and sold on the university. The conferences realign with no regards to the geographical rules they were created to adhere to.
Between the BCS and conference realignment, collegiate sports has become a difficult product to buy into.
