3 Reasons Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz Coaching TUF Is a Great Move
For those who haven't heard, the UFC announced today that bantamweights Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz will be the head coaches on Season 15 of "The Ultimate Fighter."
Cruz is the undisputed pound-for-pound king at 135 pounds, but Faber is the only fighter who has defeated "The Dominator" in 20 professional fights.
The fighters are currently 1-1 against each other, so the season finale will inevitably lead to a rubber match between the two superstars.
"The California Kid" and Cruz will coach lightweights and welterweights; the live FX edition debuting on March 9.
Here's why this was a terrific move on the part of the UFC.
A Definitive Conclusion to a Great Rivalry
1 of 3The first time these great athletes met in the cage at WEC 26, the featherweight bout saw Faber make Cruz tap to a guillotine just 1:38 seconds into the first round.
When the rematch finally occurred at UFC 132 this past July at bantamweight, it was a closely contested five-round war that saw Cruz successfully defend his title.
Faber, as well as a good portion of his fans, feel that he won the second fight as well.
Cruz wants to prove that the first fight was a fluke, and he simply got caught, while Faber wants to show the world he got robbed the second time around.
Whatever happens in the end of this trilogy, the fans are certainly anxious to see it.
More Airtime for the Little Guys
2 of 3While the 14th season of TUF no doubt benefited from the real-life animosity between the two head coaches (which will also exist between Cruz and Faber), the performances of the bantamweight and featherweight fighters showed the fans that the little guys can put on a show too.
This time around, the fans will see fighters going at it at 155 and 170 pounds respectively, but allowing fans to see the skill sets and personalities of the bantamweight coaches will add more intrigue to the lighter weight classes.
Regardless of the winner of Cruz-Faber III, more fans will be inclined to watch both competitors fight regularly and become familiar with the 135-pound division after season 15 of TUF airs.
Accredited Coaches To Develop the Young Fighters
3 of 3While this is not a new concept for TUF, Cruz and Faber are the two most accomplished guys in their division.
Between the two fighters, their resumes include 15 years of experiences, 45 career wins to just six losses and three world title reigns.
Additionally, the fighters boast different styles to complement the fighters they teach.
Cruz is a great wrestler that has excellent counter striking, while Faber has good takedowns with even better submission skills.
Faber is no slouch on the feet as well, throwing leather early and often in his fights.
