My Top 15 Soccer Goals of All Time and Why I Love Them
Trying to figure out my top 15 favorite goals of all time is like trying to find 15 needles from as many haystacks.
There are so many great goals that I have seen or remember seeing that it is hard to even think of them all, plus even if you do you may not find video evidence as many great goals have been removed from YouTube.
While I will admit that it is partially skewed towards Liverpool, I hope you can enjoy the selection I pulled together.
Enjoy the show and I hope you will list your favorites below for us all to check out.
Tiote to the Rescue
1 of 15I grew up a Liverpool fan but have always thought of Newcastle United as my second team.
Seeing Ismael Cheik Tiote blast in this last gasp volley to draw Arsenal at St. James Park last season was sublime.
Landon Donovan Makes It 2-0 vs Brazil in 2009 Confederations Cup
2 of 15At this point of the 2009 Confederations Cup I truly thought that the USA was going to do the unthinkable.
We had beaten the best team in the world in Spain with a dominant 2-0 in the semifinal and were looking set to take down perhaps the most famous national team in the history of world football, Brazil.
The USA showed a skill at counter attacking that even I did not know we possessed and Landon Donovan finished with pure class.
Xabi Alonso Goes Long
3 of 15Seeing Steven Harper off his line, former Liverpool midfield legend Xabi Alonso struck a long-range shot that surprised and delighted the entire Anfield crowd to give the Reds a 2-0 lead over Newcastle United.
When Stevie G and El Nino Were at Their Best
4 of 15I have to admit those were the days when Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were feared by all. This is one of the most priceless strikes between the two and is still one of my all time favorites.
Ryan Babel vs Chelsea 2008 UEFA Champions League
5 of 15Ryan Babel came off the bench to score an awesome goal in extra time for the Reds. It is one of several moments where I thought Babel would be a great asset to the club, but unfortunately that never came to fruition.
I still wish we had his speed off the bench to run down the wings and support Luis Suarez.
Welcome to the League Stevie G
6 of 15Steven Gerrard scored his first goal in the EPL for Liverpool on December 5, 1999 when he split through the Sheffield Wednesday defense and delivered a pinpoint strike at the 69th minute.
Yes That Was an American, the One and Only Clint Dempsey
7 of 15Clint Dempsey has always been my favorite United States international plying his trade abroad. I also have a close tie to the player as a resident of Greenville, South Carolina which is home to Furman University where Deuce rose to his first bit of fame leading the Paladins to the last 16 of the NCAA College Cup.
When Juventus came to Craven Cottage in the 2009-10 UEFA Europa League it was thought that the Old Lady were more than likely going to run rampant on the Cottagers. However, that was not the case.
Dempsey was not long returned from injury and to see the American score with a perfectly placed shot of that skill level was a thing of beauty.
Fabio Aurelio vs Chelsea 2009
8 of 15While Brazilian fullback Fabio Aurelio has yet to be seen this season in Red and it is likely that he will be sold at the end of the current season, he has had some great moments at Anfield when he was not injured. So far this season he has only been named on the bench once in the club's 2-1 Carling Cup victory over Stoke City.
The goal above was an excellent free kick that fooled everyone from Petr Cech to the fans as he curled it in from well outside the box with Chelsea and most likely half the Liverpool squad having expected a swinging cross. Instead the Reds went 1-0 in the second leg of their Champions League tie.
Check the video at 2:00 mark for Aurelio's greatness.
Luis Suarez Curls in a Wonder Goal Against Stoke City
9 of 15Fernando Torres scored some great goals in his time but this curling strike from his replacement Luis Suarez was another piece of masterful skill from the Uruguayan.
Despite his frustrating goal percentage for his large shot total I feel it is only a matter of time before he dials it all back in.
Shwing!
10 of 15It was impossible it seemed to find a full video of both Craig Bellamy's goal and then his nutter putter celebration, so I opted for the celebration version.
The spitfire scored a great header thanks to a set up from John Arne Riise, who ironically was the other party involved in the putter incident.
Bellamy would end up leaving the club after only one season, but it is great to see him back and picking up where he left off.
Steven Gerrard Blasts One Past Shaka Hislop in 2006 FA Cup Final
11 of 15Steven Gerrard continued the great form from the previous league season in the next and on to the 2006 FA Cup Final against West Ham United.
Captain Fantastic again came to his club's rescue with this magnificent strike from outside the box.
Luis Suarez Robbed by Dirk Kuyt vs Manchester United
12 of 15Dirk Kuyt may have gotten credit for this goal and would go on to finish a hat trick against Manchester United when the Red Devils came to Anfield in March of 2011.
Suarez showed the height of his skills and this was certain to be his most exemplary goal in his still young Liverpool career had Dirk Kuyt not poached it from him.
Torres Gives Spain the Victory
13 of 15Once again Fernando Torres' class made a great goal to watch. I hated to see Germany go down, but it was hard not to pull for Torres and Spain when he was a Red in top form.
The Liverpool striker was the difference maker that allowed Spain to lift the 2008 UEFA European Championship and started the Spanish national team on their blistering run of form that saw them win the 2010 World Cup and still has them as favorites for the 2012 Euro's.
He's Big, He's Red, His Feet Stick out the Bed, Peter Crouch!
14 of 15There is nothing better than a guy that is a lanky 6'7" striker scoring a top drawer overhead bicycle kick. I still think Crouchie is a great player and would be a better one off the bench than Andy Carroll is currently proving to be.
Stevie G Kicks off the Miracle in Istanbul
15 of 15AC Milan ran up a 3-0 lead on the Reds in the 2005 UEFA Champions League Final. An inspired second half and extra time performance from the Reds, that started with the above goal from Steven Gerrard on the 54th minute, would see the Liverpudlians overcome the Italian powerhouse for their fifth European Cup.
