Heisman Finalists 2011: Houston's Case Keenum Is Biggest Heisman Snub Ever

Donald WoodDec 6, 2011

There is no person more deserving of the Heisman Trophy this season than Case Keenum from the University of Houston Cougars.

The Heisman is supposed to given to the most outstanding player in collegiate football, as it says in the by-laws of the Heisman committee. It was not this season.

If this wasn’t all about politics, the runaway choice for unanimous Heisman winner this season would be Keenum. Just look at the year he put up.

In 2011, Keenum led college football with 5,099 yards passing, over 700 more yards than anyone in the entire country. That’s not enough to even get on the finalist ballot?

What about his 45 passing touchdowns this season, also a college football-leading number? These passing numbers must not mean anything for a quarterback that led his team to a 12-1 record on the season, either. We must live in the twilight zone.

The voters obviously forget to take into account the fact that Keenum also broke all kinds of NCAA records this season. While Case and the Cougars were breaking the career yardage and passing touchdowns records, the Heisman voters were staring blankly into the eyes of Andrew Luck.

It’s amazing how people can call Robert Griffin III the Heisman front runner at this point when he scored almost 10 fewer touchdowns through the air than Keenum and threw for 1,000 yards less. Griffin’s team also lost two more games that Keenum’s.

Trent Richardson is another player who is as overrated as you can get in college football. Playing at Alabama has its perks, but special treatment in the Heisman voting shouldn’t be one of them. While Richardson had an amazing season, it was Alabama’s defense that got them through many games.

Andrew Luck also had a mediocre season and doesn’t even deserve to be in the same Heisman conversation as Case Keenum. While it’s obvious Luck will be a far better pro than Keenum, this isn’t an award about who will be better, it’s given to the player that was the best.

The best player in America this season was Case Keenum. Open and shut case.
