January Transfer Rumours: 11 Biggest Scorers Available During January Window

Thomas AtzenhofferDec 5, 2011

The January transfer window is closing in fast, and with teams jockeying for position in their respective leagues as well as in the market, there is a host of moves that are possible.

One of the biggest areas that is sure to be addressed by clubs in the January window is the attack, as the need for firepower in the final third is becoming a problem for many teams looking to compete for top honors in their domestic leagues as well as Europe.

Many big names have been thrown about as possible major moves in the January window.

In no particular order, here are some of the major goal scorers that could be available or on the move come January 1, 2012.

Didier Drogba

1 of 12

Another Chelsea attacker that could be on the transfer list this January.

Despite his inclusion in the starting lineup as of late, primarily to cover for a toothless Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba has turned down a one-year extension of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

With the striker set to depart on a free transfer in the summer, it would not surprise me to see the Blues try and sell him to at least get a little cash value out of him before he goes.

Miralem Sulejmani

2 of 12

Ajax Amsterdam's Serbian sensation, Miralem Sulejmani, could be an under-the-radar target for many clubs looking to add a young striking option to their front line attack.

The 22-year-old has nine goals for Ajax this term in 11 games, which already exceeds his total of eight in the Eredivisie last term in 22 starts and 10 substitute appearances.

Hulk

3 of 12

FC Porto front man Hulk has been defended week in and week out in the press as not for sale, or only for sale for an exorbitant amount of cash.

However, that does not take away from the fact that some club may try and break the bank for him.

Loic Remy

4 of 12

Olympique Marseille's 24-year-old striker, Loic Remy, is a possible buy for teams looking at younger talent to foster this January.

The Frenchman has obvious talent and has managed seven goals and two assists so far this season despite Marseille's troubles with their poor form to start the campaign.

Fernando Torres

5 of 12

Chelsea's £50 million Spanish front man, Fernando Torres, was supposed to be the striker that once again made the Blues' attack indefensible.

However, that has hardly been the case, and as he continues to struggle for form after close to a year since his massive move, there are whispers that he could be offloaded to try and recoup at least some of the outlay.

Fernando Llorente

6 of 12

Spain's other Fernando, Fernando Llorente, of Athletic Bilbao was on the wish list of multiple clubs last January and over the summer, but no one made an official bid for the player.

With many major clubs across Europe looking for a top-class striker, the 26-year-old could be available for the right price.

Roberto Soldado

7 of 12

Valencia's striker, Roberto Soldado, is another Spanish-based player and goal scorer that could be up for the right offer.

His 14 goals and an assist across both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League has him on many clubs' radars, including London's Tottenham Hotspur.

Lukas Podolski

8 of 12

Arsenal are the team that appear first in line to try and secure a move for FC Koln and German national team striker Lukas Podolski.

After years of the 26-year-old failing to live up to his promise in club football after proving as a superstar national team player, it looks like the Polish-born player has finally figured it out.

Countless moments of off-club strife are finally leading the player to look for an exit strategy from his hometown club.

Leandro Damiao

9 of 12

Brazilian and Internacional striker Leandro Damiao is the latest and greatest young samba star to be linked with a move to Barcelona.

The 22-year-old could definitely be lining up to fill a void if David Villa is sold, and with another solid season in Brazil under his belt, it could be the perfect time for a European club to come after him.

David Villa

10 of 12

The Barcelona front man has been instrumental in the Blaugrana's continued run on top. But, in the last few months, he has been more and more shuffled around.

Alexis Sanchez and Pedro Rodriguez continue to have more time around Lionel Messi at the heart of the team's attack.

At the age of 30, he could be set for at least one more major move, and Liverpool is one of many clubs that could be in for him in January despite him telling the press he wants to stay and fight for his place.

Robin Van Persie

11 of 12

Arsenal fans may hate to hear it, but Robin van Persie is far from being a non-sale player at the Emirates. If the price is right, there is a chance he could be sold.

His refusal to sign a contract extension earlier in the season does still sow seeds of doubt.

While all the Gunners fans hope their captain will remain in London, there is nothing that says he truly is not for sale.
