Brett Favre: Chicago Bears Have Nothing To Lose in Signing Veteran QB

Eric BowmanDec 5, 2011

When an NFL team is in need of a quarterback, it's not long before the Brett Favre rumors start up. The latest team to join this saga is the Chicago Bears, and there would be nothing wrong if they called the old man up for some help.

If this guy thinks he still has what it takes to play in the NFL, then give him a shot. If he falls flat on his face it will only make him look worse. Perhaps Favre is just after a personal Christmas present when the Bears play the likely undefeated Green Bay Packers on December 25th.

Sure, the Bears might be ridiculed by some for signing him, but they're not going to win with what they have anyway, so bring Favre in to see what's got.

Michael C. Wright of ESPNChicago is reporting that Brett Favre would talk to the Bears, but the problem is, they aren't thinking about it.

This sounds like a last-minute case of desperation on Favre's part, but at the same time, the Bears have nothing to lose in adding the future Hall of Famer.

Head coach Love Smith told Wright that, "We're going to make improvements with our group. We're not looking on the outside. We won't have a quarterback tryout or anything like that."

Unfortunately, the group he is referring to is Caleb Hanie, Nathan Enderle and Josh McCown, all of whom should never be starters in the NFL. Yes, even at the age of 42, Favre is a much better option than those guys.

At 7-5, the Bears are falling fast and are in grave danger of missing the playoffs. Matt Forte became the latest Bear to go down with an injury, and Wright tweeted on Sunday that the star running back will be out for a few weeks.

Forte was all the offense had left, but adding Favre could potentially give Chicago some much-needed firepower.

It's understandable for fans to get sick of all the Favre talk.

I'm right there with you.

However, you can't deny what he is capable of, and the Bears wouldn't hurt anything by signing him.

Looking back to Favre's last moments in the NFL, he was continuously banged up and a shell of his former self. That may make it seem like him stepping back to the gridiron a year later would be a terrible decision, but I say let this old man come back and embarrass himself even more.

That's the worse that could happen.

The reward could mean big wins for Chicago, which they don't appear they will be getting down the stretch of their schedule.

While we may be deep into the season, and Favre would need time to learn the system, it still wouldn't hinder Chicago to bring him in for a test drive, so to speak.

If you're trying to make the playoffs, you need to pull out all the stops as an organization, even if it means being laughed at by some by taking a gamble on Favre.

After all, Chicago wouldn't be any worse than they already are if they added everybody's favorite quarterback.
