We Are Not the IWC; We Are All Part of the Same Wrestling Community

The Doctor Chris MuellerDec 5, 2011

Lately I have seen an acronym thrown around as if it is a bad word. IWC is something that people who choose to write about wrestling in the Internet have been dubbed in recent years.

It stands for "Internet Wrestling Community," and for all intents and purposes, we are looked down on in the same light as tabloids are by legitimate news publications.

But what the people who are not in the so-called IWC do not seem to understand is that we are the same as them. We are fans, we are critics and most importantly, we are dedicated.

By choosing to write about wrestling, we have not chosen to separate ourselves from the rest of the wrestling community as some would believe, but rather the opposite. We do this to connect with other people who share our views or wish to debate them.

Whenever I write a new piece, there is some comment saying something along the line of "The IWC thinks this and that."

This bothers me, because it is presented as if we all have the same opinion and operate as as a sort of hive mind.

That is not the case; we debate amongst each other the same way you and your friends do when watching Raw from your couches. The difference is we choose to reach out further to other fans to include them in the discussion.

If anything, the IWC members debate amongst each other more than other writers, because most of what we discuss is based on opinion, whereas other sports analysts base their arguments on statistics.

Take Randy Orton, for instance. Yesterday I wrote a piece titled Should Randy Orton Return to the Cocky and Brash Gimmick?. The response was split between those who like him better now and those who liked him better before.

I do not wish the term IWC to become synonymous with bad reporting or worse opinions, but rather become synonymous with good-natured debate and expression of opinions.

If there is one thing we in the "IWC" do know, it is that wrestling fans may be the most opinionated people in the world. We should know, because we are those people, too.

Because of this, it is no surprise that these kinds of divides happen between fans of wrestling, but it does not have to be that way.

I am not some former WWE writer who chooses to write about wrestling because that is all I know, I am a fan who chooses to write because it is fun and gives me a way to find out what other people think.

Here in Bleacher Report, we cover all sports, but I do not ever remember ever seeing the NFL writers called the IFC or the baseball writers being called the IBC.

And yes, I realize those are already acronyms for a brand of root beer and a independent movie channel.

The fact that wrestling is a predetermined event makes people's opinions that much more debated because we never know if the best guy for the job will actually get the recognition.

This is not a love letter to the IWC, but rather a plea to those outside of it to realize that we are all fans of the same thing and should not be divided over something as silly as how we choose to express our opinions.

I will leave you with this thought: If you make the effort to separate yourself from others, then you are ensuring that they do not want you there to begin with.
